“The first thing is, you've got to start talking about it. It starts with respect. If you're allowing people to be belittled, if you don't have a respectful work environment, then you can’t talk about it. You've got to create an environment which models respect and equity, so you can talk about it. Businesses are doing the bare minimum to support. If you're not talking about your policies, if you’re not encouraging people to take leave, or encouraging people to feel safe, then nothing's going to happen. Big companies are using working groups for workplace DV support, asking employees to use their own time outside of their job to implement these things. They churn and burn their advocates; somebody's passionate and starts the process, but two years on, they're burnt out and we start again with someone new. I am going to change workplaces one leader at a time. I can't do it from the outside, but I can equip the ones on the inside with my knowledge.” - Lisa McAdams, Founder of Safe Space Workplace and Two Good ambassador Read more answers from Delia Donovan and Jess Hill on how workplaces can effectively identify and educate on family and domestic violence: https://lnkd.in/gUn_6r79 #ChangeTheCourse #DoGoodWithTwoGood #BetterTwogether #DomesticViolence #FinancialAbuse

"Back when all this happened, I was in a really, really dark place. I wasn't eating, I couldn't organise my days at all, I didn't know what to do - I was just beside myself. I was just a normal person living in a normal house, and then…we were homeless. Being in a better financial situation now is just amazing - it's helped change my life. Just keep hoping and trusting; there are good people out there that really do want to help you...and they will. “DON'T GIVE UP. HAVE FAITH AND TRY TO TRUST IN THE COMMUNITY - IN PEOPLE - AGAIN.” In 2017, Marina's husband of 30 years became a missing person, stealing all their savings and major assets and leaving her and her daughter homeless, with $21,000 in debts. This is her incredible story of rebuilding her self worth, reclaiming her independence and finding her way home again, one courageous step at a time. As Marina says, there are good people out there who are waiting to support you. If you suspect that a loved one is experiencing financial abuse, there's a whole network of people that are here to help; simple share our PATHWAYS and empower them with the tools and community they might need to take their next step. "I liked working alongside the corporate teams who came in for their team building days, too; it gave me that bit of social confidence back. My past experience with supervision helped me - I used to work in the mines for about four years, supervising cleaning and kitchen teams, and I was a housekeeping manager for a while too - so it was good to have the opportunity to be in that space again. I’d become so socially isolated the past few years, having that bit of interaction in the workplace was really significant. It felt like really important work too, what we did there; at the time, I was living in a refuge, so I knew firsthand the impact of having a meal at the end of the day that's nice, and easy, and tasty. It really made me put that extra bit of care into cooking those shelter meals." - Kylie, Work Work Alumni Looking for a corporate team building day that leaves a lasting impact on team morale, as well as tangible social impact in your community? "I could see money being taken out of my bank and I didn't know how to go about it...it really played with my mental state. My daughter could see it; she goes, "pack your bag, we're going". I said, okay. So we packed a bag and left...and I found myself in a refuge in Sydney. From where I come from, to where I am now, is magic. I have so many opportunities, I have so many great people around me. Believe in yourself. Never give up; there's always greatness right around the corner. JUST KEEP ON SMILING, KEEP ON DOING. IT'S NOT EASY...BUT IT CAN BE DONE.” From digital and financial abuse, to homelessness, Leanne and her daughter fled their home, their family and their community for a chance to survive. Today, Leanne is an artist with a world of opportunities ahead of her, living her purpose and surrounded by family and community once more. “Coercive control is essentially the umbrella dynamic that contains most of what we know as family violence. Family violence is much weirder than we've thought; the perpetration of it is very strange. I remember when I was putting together The Perpetrator's Handbook – which was the first chapter of my book – and looking at the sorts of behaviours, we're talking about something that is much less akin to an incident of assault as we've often thought about domestic violence, and much closer to the experience of being in a cult. Or being a cult leader, if you're perpetrating that abuse. The whole process of family and domestic violence is not just about consequential incidents – like, it happened on Wednesday and it happened again on the following Friday. It's an unrelenting system that never switches off. The good times are just as big a part of it as the bad times…if you have good times. We’re talking about things like isolation, manipulation, gaslighting, surveillance. Creating an atmosphere of omnipotence; such that the victim-survivor never feels like they have any private space to have their own perspective. If they have children, it’s having their parenting constantly undermined, being coerced into much more disciplinary tactics than they would like to use against their children, or having those relationships completely undermined and disrupted. The big part is the process of thought reform – and that's why I compare it to being in a cult. Coercive control is used in cults. It's used in hostage situations. It's used in sex trafficking. It's used in some prisoner-of-war situations. The point is, the person using the coercive control is using a whole suite of behaviours – that could be coming out of them quite instinctively, or coming out quite tactically – to change the behavior of the person they're subjecting it to. They change their thought patterns, they foster self-blame – which is what will often keep women there longer. If it's not the fear, it's the feeling they don't deserve to be safe, because the abuse is their fault. This process of thought reform means that leaving is a very long process. For those supporting the people leaving, be it colleagues, friends, family – it can be very frustrating. You can feel like you‘ve said the same thing 20, 30, 40 times…to the point where you just don't feel like you can say it anymore.” - Jess Hill, journalist, author, speaker and writer of 'See What You Made Me Do' Read more on how authentic DV support in the workplace can change the course of someone's life: https://lnkd.in/gCeRDhH5 #ChangeTheCourse #BetterTwogether #DomesticViolence

We asked Delia Donovan, CEO of Domestic Violence NSW, what workplaces can do to educate and inform on, as well as identify and reduce, domestic and family violence. Here were her 6 tips: 1. All workplaces can be part of important changes to their culture by promoting gender equality, safety and respect. Challenge the drivers of violence – call out disrespect, harmful comments and behaviours, and act on it. This is a good resource to check out: https://lnkd.in/eH2PAsr
 2. Have resources that communicate local D+FV services, and men’s referral services, in bathrooms and common areas. 3. Provide D+FV training to all staff, not just management. Commonly, people experiencing D+FV will disclose to a close colleague, rather than a line manager.
 4. Provide other alternatives to just line manager and/or HR reps for people to disclose - for instance, training Wellbeing Champions on responding to disclosures, so they know where and how to refer someone to support services.
 5. Recognise changes in employee behaviour, productivity and general wellbeing – experiencing coercive control and D+FV impacts self-esteem and self-worth.
 6. Understand that perpetrators could be using workplace equipment (computers, phones) to perpetrate violence, and have policies in place to respond to this. A huge congratulations to Molly Seaborn for her award-winning report on Two Good's impact! Joining us all the way from the UK, Molly took a deep dive into all that Two Good entails, and emerged with insights that made even our veteran Two Gooders shed a tear. It was an honour to be chosen for her Impact Project, and we are so happy her work has received the recognition it deserved.

I am honoured to say that I am a 2024 Beaumont Award winner in recognition of my impact project with Two Good Co (and support from the Laidlaw Foundation) in Sydney last summer. I had the pleasure of returning to the University of Leeds to attend both the UoL UGRC and the Beaumont Undergraduate Research Award ceremony. The report is truly a testament to the incredible work being done to walk with women on their journey back from domestic violence and other related trauma. I cannot express how proud I am to have been a small part of this program and am eternally grateful for being trusted and, more importantly, welcomed with open arms into their space. This award is dedicated to the bravery of the women who come through Two Good, and the unrelenting drive of the entire Two Good team to #changethecourse, one good thing, place and meal at a time. Thank you again to Prof Adam Beaumont DL for sponsoring this award and I look forward to keeping you updated! Please go check out the Two Good Co socials, and if you want to read more about my project, my LinkedIn has links to my blogs which detail my personal experience. #research #twogoodco #universityofleeds #beaumontaward #laidlaw

Australian Ethical proudly volunteered at some incredible charities and support organisations during our first ever AE Giving month which took place in May/June. We: - Cooked up a storm with OzHarvest after they taught us some valuable zero-waste cooking skills We sent out the meals we prepared to local charities and also joined OzHarvest at the Waterloo Open Market. - Joined Two Good Co twice in one week to prepare hundreds of meals together for shelters around Sydney, helping vulnerable women. - Spent a day with ReLove moving furniture into homes of those escaping domestic violence, experiencing homelessness and seeking asylum. - Got out in the fresh air and planted celery and beetroot with Pocket City Farms and learned how our communities can protect and regenerate our environment. - Got stuck into some hard work on the Collingwood Children's Farm, who focus on providing personal development for at risk youth & people experiencing disabilities.   We're always looking for new ways to give back, so if there’s an organisation you think we should volunteer with, let us know below.
