🚨🆕 Over 60 climate scientists call for #RealZero emission targets! A new pledge organised by the Lethal Humidity Global Council and signed by experts across nine countries made it very clear: the only path to prevent further escalation of climate impacts is #RealZero - not #NetZero. This means moving beyond ineffective #CarbonOffsets towards real emission reductions! Scientists warn that the push for "net zero", although widely adopted, is often just an illusion of progress. Relying on #CarbonCredits, offsets, and unproven technologies like Carbon Capture & Storage (#CCS) & carbon removals (#CDR) is not enough! Just spent the last two days at an amazing ECR workshop and industry forum organized by the UNSW Institute for Climate Risk & Response, bringing together an exciting mix of professionals from psychology, law, industry, and science—all focused on the critical issue of climate change. One intriguing insight that came up was a study showing that many nations tend to trust general scientists over climate scientists, potentially highlighting the political complexities surrounding climate communication. Overall, this all broadened my perspective on the multifaceted ways in which climate change can be addressed, and it was great to connect with such a diverse group of professionals and hear interesting insights from all the panel members. It reinforced the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in tackling one of the greatest challenges of our time #ClimateChange #Interdisciplinary #ECR #Collaboration #NewPerspectives

Yesterday, CCRC PhD students presented their work at the annual UNSW Institute for Climate Risk & Response ECR workshop. Well done to Ying Lung Liu, Dr. Himadri Saini, Matt Grant, Tanya patel, and Camille Mora for presenting their research on topics ranging from large-scale climate drivers to drought trends and severe thunderstorms in Australia and climate justice at this interdisciplinary event! Also, congratulations to Matt for being awarded the best 15 minute presentation and to Camille for being awarded the best lightning talk!

A new paper co-authored by #CCRC’s Laurie Menviel was just published in Nature Geoscience! This new study, which is a collaboration between the Université de Grenoble (France), UNSW, and the University of Bern (Switzerland) has shed light on rapid variations in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations over the past 500,000 years, phenomena referred to as « CO2 jumps ». These jumps correspond to increases of about ten parts per million (ppm) in atmospheric CO2 concentrations over a period of several decades to several centuries, and have been recorded in ancient air trapped in Antarctic ice cores. By conducting new high-resolution CO2 measurements on the EPICA Dome C Antarctic ice core and performing new simulations using a climate model, the researchers demonstrated that in periods of high obliquity, the different terrestrial carbon reservoirs, particularly continental vegetation, are especially sensitive to climate changes driven by major shifts in Atlantic Ocean circulation. Disruption of these carbon reservoirs triggers massive releases of carbon into the atmosphere, which are responsible for these CO2 jumps. New paper alert! Sea-ice surface temperature from atmospheric reanalyses is often used to track ice melt and climate change, but its accuracy in Antarctica remains uncertain. A new study led by CCRC's Zhaohui Wang and co-authors including Alexander D. Fraser, Phillip Reid, Siobhan O'Farrell, and Richard Coleman reveals strong, persistent warm biases in recent generations of reanalyses, mainly driven by inaccurate cloud properties and inappropriate sea-ice representation. This study found that the enhanced fractional sea ice module configured in the latest atmospheric analyses has led to a strong warm bias due to the modulation of the coupling between sea ice and clouds. New paper Alert 🔊 Are you interested in learning more about ensemble estimates of Australian soil organic carbon using machine learning and process-based modeling? This new work by CCRC's Lingfei Wang and co-authors including Gab Abramowitz, Ying Ping Wang, Andrew Pitman, AO, FAA, and Raphael VISCARRA ROSSEL, underscores the considerable uncertainty in SOC estimates derived from different modeling approaches and emphasizes the importance of rigorous out-of-sample validation before applying any one approach in Australia. They trained machine learning models and process-based models to estimate Australian SOC stocks in top 30 cm soils.
