Did you know? Australia produces about 5 million tonnes of canola annually, of which approximately 3 million tonnes are exported each year. Impressively, 75% of these exports are converted into biofuel in Europe, where there's a strong demand from corporations seeking green alternatives to meet their climate commitments. This raises an intriguing question: What would it look like to utilize this significant feedstock to produce premium biofuel products right here in Australia? Harnessing local canola for biofuel production not only supports the global shift towards renewable energy but also underscores the importance of strengthening Australian manufacturing. My last selfie for the day, I promise. Caught up with Victorian Bioenergy Network founding member Jemena's Suzie Jakobovits at All Energy Australia in the session that Dr Scott Grierson from Valorify chaired on Decarbonising of Manufacturing. I did like the slide on fossil gas replacement trajectory and the potential role of #hydrogen and synthetic #emethane can play to meet our gas demand with #renewable and low emissions gas. Key message of the need for government policy support at all levels came through throughout both the Bioenergy Australia supported sessions at All Energy. Great insights as always from Matthew McKenzie from BlueScope, Melissa Perrow from Brickworks Building Products and Dr Scott Grierson. And another noteworthy upcoming Australian #bioenergy project this time in Tassie. Tasmania’s first renewable gas plant – the Westbury BioHub. This project will convert organic waste into renewable biomethane, contributing to the decarbonisation of Tasmania’s energy supply and supporting industries that require alternatives to electricity. Way to go Solstice Energy and Optimal Group. Looking forward forward to seeing this project up and running and sharing the progress with Victorian Bioenergy Network members in upcoming events in 2025.
