Water for Women

At the end of the day, it all comes back to water, sanitation and hygiene. This is our message in a bottle, help spread our message to every shore. 💧 Over the past seven years, #WaterforWomen partners have been collaborating with communities on the frontlines of climate change to address inequities in access to #WASH resources and strengthening the systems that underpin them. 🤝 Partnering with and led by local communities, governments, civil society, rights holder and research organisations, together we have reached more than 3.4 million people in 16 countries with improved WASH services; among them, some of the world’s poorest and most marginalised. One final wrap-up from #WorldWaterWeek in Stockholm! 💧🌍 Water for Women played a key role, driving important conversations on climate-resilient and inclusive WASH. A huge thank you to all our incredible partners, colleagues, and allies who made this week so memorable. We held sessions with iDE (International Development Enterprises) and Centre for Advocacy and Research - India on Menstrual Health, highlighting how investing in menstrual health is crucial for climate resilience, and launched the Menstrual Health Learning Brief . We provided platforms for coalitions that emphasised the need for gender-inclusive strategies and collective action for equitable water access. The Climate Resilient Sanitation Coalition #CRSC also stressed that sanitation is a key climate solution. We reflected on the vital role the WASH sector must play in addressing gender-based violence (GBV), alongside experts from Centre for Advocacy and Research - India, WaterAid Australia, and Australia’s Water Professional of the Year, Hon. Phil Duncan. We showcased how research is essential for developing and scaling climate-resilient WASH solutions, with insights from SNV, Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, and others. In a Governance session with Yayasan Plan International Indonesia, UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, and Centre for Advocacy and Research - India, we highlighted how participatory approaches and tools for trust are vital to building resilient WASH systems. At #WorldWaterWeek, Water for Women hosted "Tools for Trust," showcasing innovative tools designed to strengthen community engagement while demonstrating the crucial role of inclusion and equity in building climate resilience and achieving #SDG6. The session opened with remarks from Sheryl Hedges from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, followed by an interactive marketplace. Here, we presented tools from across Asia and the Pacific, with live demonstrations by Akhila Sivadas from the Centre for Advocacy and Research - India, Elise Mann from iDE (International Development Enterprises), Naomi Carrard from UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures, and Chelsea Huggett from WaterAid Australia. Over the past six years, our projects in the region have proven that when diverse voices—particularly women and marginalised groups—are involved in decision-making, solutions become more sustainable and equitable. 🌍💧 Effective water governance is key to preventing conflict and ensuring equitable access to resources. During #WorldWaterWeek, we hosted a session on "Governance Approaches for Increased Water Security and Gender Equity," featuring successful models from across the Asia-Pacific region. 🌿 Featuring insights from Zahra Bolouri (Water for Women), Juhi Jain (CFAR NGO), Melita Grant (UTS Institute for Sustainable Futures), and Herning Tyas Ekaristi (Yayasan Plan International Indonesia), we showcased how inclusive and participatory systems in Cambodia, Indonesia, and India promote peace and resilience. At #WorldWaterWeek we explored how circular economy principles can revolutionise the water sector and drive sustainability and resilience. Participants gained practical tools and learned how to apply these principles to water and sanitation in diverse contexts, with real-world examples to inspire their work.
