  • When Ty Cleary pauses to reflect on his work with West Moreton Health patients, he is hit with an enormous sense of pride and belonging. The proud Mununjali and Undambi man is our Indigenous Liaison Service Coordinator, a vital link between our health services and the community. ‘An important part of my work is ensuring the Indigenous Hospital Liaison Service meets the cultural and spiritual needs of the community,’ he says. ‘It’s also about supporting clinicians by educating them around culturally appropriate communication and care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. ‘By introducing positive changes and processes throughout Ipswich Hospital, the Indigenous Hospital Liaison Service team is reaching new services and helping more people that we haven’t had the chance to previously.’ Ty’s work is thrust into the spotlight today for National Close the Gap Day, promoting First Nations health equality. ‘Close the Gap Day addresses inconsistencies in life outcomes, health and education for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, aiming for equality across those areas,’ Ty says. ‘I love being able to create strategies and implement them to help close the gap on health inequities for the Mob. ‘It’s something incredibly important to me and a cause close to my heart.’

  • [CW: Drug use] Did you know our nurses provide care in hospitals, in the community, and in prisons? 🙌 The West Moreton Health team provides healthcare to most of Queensland's prisons. Sarah is one of our nurses working with prisoners at three of the centres. 👩⚕️ She has a special role, called a Dual Diagnosis Clinician. It means she helps prisoners who have mental health concerns and drug and alcohol misuse. As a registered nurse, she saw a pattern of patients with both conditions. “Many prisoners have a history of trauma and stress," she said. "They may have conditions like bipolar disorder and use drugs." “It became clear for me that mental health concerns and substance misuse often go hand in hand," she said. Sarah’s passion for this work started early. Growing up, she was always comfortable supporting people with mental health concerns. During her nursing training, Sarah noticed a pattern - many patients struggled with both mental health issues and addiction, often returning for care without lasting recovery. Wanting to make a difference, she specialised in mental health, starting her career in an acute psychiatric ward before moving into community mental health. In 2018, Sarah began working in prison healthcare. Now, she spends her days providing therapy, harm-reduction support, and connecting prisoners with community services and rehab programs to help them rebuild their lives as they transition back to community. “I encourage other nurses to explore mental health or prison healthcare. It’s a rewarding career where you can truly make a difference.” Find out more about working in prison health services here: https://lnkd.in/gWZHveDj #Healthcare #Nursing #MentalHealth #PrisonHealth #WestMoretonHealth #CareerInHealth #PublicHealth #HealthHero #Jobs

  • Everyone has a story. This one is about Dr Lilantha Wedisinghe. He is a gynaecologist, father, husband, researcher, and friend. That’s him in the front row, second from the left. He's proud to train Ipswich Hospital's future leaders in gynaecology and obstetrics care. Dr Wedisinghe led the development of a cervical screening decision aid, now published in a top medical journal. He set out to improve the uptake of screening by making it easier for women to understand their options. Only 6 in ten Queensland women do the recommended screening every 5 years. It’s even less for women living in West Moreton. Together with researchers at Ipswich Hospital and The University of Queensland, Dr Wedisinghe developed a simple guide to help inform a woman's cervical screening choice. Women can choose between two types of tests. They can collect the sample themselves, or a doctor can do it. The guide explains the options and how they compare. The research was made possible by the Ipswich Hospital Foundation, via the Regina and Vicki Doig Research Scholarship for cancer care. The goal? To support more women to routinely screen for cervical cancer. Why? Screening saves lives. It's been Dr Wedisinghe's mission to improve survival rates since the death of a colleague from cervical cancer. His research highlights how clear communication can help people to prioritise their health. • Step inside our Cardiac Catheter Laboratory at Ipswich Hospital. What's a Cardiac Catheter Lab? It’s the place you'll come if you need life-saving investigation and diagnosis of serious heart health issues. It’s also a place for research and innovation. Right now, our team of doctors, nurses, radiographers and cardiac scientists are studying the use of intravascular ultrasound to open a person’s coronary arteries (called stenting). The research study looks at staff knowledge, attitudes, and confidence in using this technology to identify opportunities for better education and ultimately, deliver even better care for our patients. Cardiac conditions are a leading cause of hospitalisations in the West Moreton region which is why it's so important that we prioritise research and innovation that will directly benefit our community. Thanks to our partners Ipswich Hospital Foundation for supporting this study via the IHF Impact Funding program, you have our hand on heart gratitude. #WestMoretonHealth #CardiacCathLab #Research
