Australia is facing an extinction crisis. We lead the world in mammal extinctions and deforestation continues at alarming rates. In 2022, our beloved koala was officially classified as Endangered and the greater glider population has declined by 80% in the last 20 years. Despite the warnings, the crisis is worsening. But it’s not too late to turn things around. Here’s what we need from our political leaders to stem the tide: 🌱 Invest 1% of the budget in nature – Right now, we spend less than 0.1% on protecting wildlife. An increase to 1% could halt biodiversity decline by 2030. 📜 Reform our nature laws – Loopholes continue to allow habitat destruction, pushing species closer to extinction. Stronger protections are essential. 🌊 Lead on ocean conservation – Climate change, plastic pollution & overfishing are devastating marine ecosystems. We must do more to protect them. 💰 Shift to a nature-positive economy – Current financial systems often reward destruction. We need policies that value and protect nature. ☀️ Transition to renewables – Australia has the resources to lead in clean energy, but new fossil fuel projects keep being approved. This must stop. We’re at a crossroads: stand by as more species disappear, or act now to choose a future where nature and people thrive? It’s up to all of us to #ChooseNature. 🚨 This week, the Government has passed legislation that will weaken Australia’s already broken environmental protections. The amendment to the EPBC Act (nature laws) will exempt the Tasmanian salmon industry from proper environmental regulation in Macquarie Harbour despite the damage being experienced by the endangered Maugean skate — a move that blocks scientific oversight and sets a dangerous precedent for other polluting industries. The Government promised to strengthen nature laws. Instead, they’re carving out loopholes. We need science-based laws that protect nature — not laws that serve powerful industries. ✍️ Take action and tell your leaders to strengthen our nature laws. Tell them to Choose Nature. On #Budget night, nature got short changed — and blindsided. The Government announced modest funding for nature including: 🟢 $200M for protected areas 🟢 $12M for oceans But it’s not enough. And while attention is on the Budget, the Government is pushing through a destructive change to our environmental laws — giving the Tasmanian salmon industry a free pass, despite clear harm to an endangered species and a nearby World Heritage Area. It undermines what little progress was made. And it breaks trust. “Nature is on life support and the government is delaying treatment.” – Dermot O’Gorman WWF-Australia is calling on the next Australian Government to invest 1% of the budget into nature before it’s too late. 📰 See how nature was sidelined — and why it matters: https://lnkd.in/g-8fp-BB 👉 Take action here: https://lnkd.in/e_GDK4Mf #Budget2025 #NatureLaws #Biodiversity #ExtinctionCrisis #Auspol #Conservation

🚨 Breaking News: Critical Nature Laws are at further risk this week! 🚨 This week the Government is rushing through legislation that would further weaken nature laws – prioritising industry over scientific concerns and setting a dangerous precedent. We are urging the government to reconsider these proposed amendments and protect nature. This is another example of why our environment laws need an overhaul. You have helped us to advocate for stronger nature laws to protect Aussie wildlife. So far, over 43,000 WWF-Australia supporters have raised their voice to support these critical reforms. This is a critical moment to have your say and call on your leaders to Choose Nature and fix our failing nature laws. Your voice matters. 👉 Send a message now to your political leaders urging them to Choose Nature: https://lnkd.in/gr_JN_sf 📢: Anthony Albanese Tanya Plibersek Chris Bowen MP Nicole M. 🌳 Forests are among the most valuable assets we have — yet they are often overlooked. They clean our air, purify our water, provide medicinal resources, and regulate our climate. They are essential to global health, food security, and economic stability. On this International Day of Forests, let’s recognise the role forests play in our lives and economies. Protecting them is protecting our future. #InternationalDayOfForests #Sustainability #ClimateAction #ConservationMatters #ChooseNature

A remarkable discovery on Lungtalanana Island! 🌱 For decades, no one had seen an echidna here, and after the devastating 2014 wildfire, it was feared they had disappeared completely. But while reviewing thousands of trail camera images, Pakana Rangers made an incredible discovery: a trimanya (echidna in palawa kani) still survives on the island! Now, rangers are working to find out: is this Australia’s loneliest echidna, or could there be more? This sighting is part of a broader cultural restoration project led by the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, working to heal Country through the removal of invasive species, the return of culturally significant wildlife, and the reinstatement of Traditional land management, including cultural burning. 📸 Read more about this important work here: https://lnkd.in/gfFEyUWw #Restoration #Conservation #WWFAustralia
