Inspiring the next generation of Aerospace professionals.
About us
Cool Aeronautics is the Royal Aeronautical Society’s STEM outreach program that aims to introduce school children (particularly primary age) and the public to the fascinating world and people of flying, aerospace engineering, and space. These activities represent a crucial part of the Society’s efforts to provide a ‘through-life’ approach to its outreach and careers activities. In particular, Cool Aeronautics embodies the Society’s aim to ‘promote aerospace and aviation to a new generation’. Our thanks to our Cool Aeronautics STEM Partner Nova Systems.

Based on the enthusiasm of the students and the excitement during the launches of their designs, it would be safe to say that students were inspired by the possibilities of a career in aeronautical engineering during the Engineers Australia Experience Engineering! Girls Conference Celebrating 2024 International Women in Engineering Day. Cool Aeronautics and student teams from New South Wales's 7 accredited engineering Universities facilitated engineering-inspired workshops with over 330 female and non-binary students. The Cool Aeronautics Aeronautical Challenge required students to design, build, test and fly an aircraft, learning about the engineering design process, aerodynamics and innovative thinking. Without the support our volunteer facilitators and the organisations where they work or study, there would not have been 88 aircraft designed, built and flown! Thank you Vincent Kannan (RAeS Student Member), Liana Sellam McMillan from Spiral Blue, Misbahul Zannat Fabiha from Jet Aviation, Natalie Bowesman, Igor Andonov and Suvrat Jain from the USYD Rocketry Team, Brian Chung Hao Ling and Jessica Agda from the UNSW Aviation Society, along with visiting engineers Tyce Barton from Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), Manju Puthanveetil from Endeavour Energy (NSW), Kate Ford from Sydney Metro and Nidhi Vyas and Jasmine Goode from RAAF Richmond. Thank you Caryn Morgan from Engineers Australia for your untiring advocacy for STEM Education. Our volunteers had a great time working with students from 8 schools from across Sydney, the Illawarra and the Riverina who participated in the #DiscoverEngineering Day with the Cool Aeronautics Aerial Design Challenge. Royal Aeronautical Society Australian Division volunteers, along with industry friends, have been supporting this initiative from Engineers Australia for the past few years. Through this program, our volunteers can engage with students from grades 7-10 in the classroom either in person or virtually and share their passion for aerospace with the next generation while the students have fun and learn. Thank you Misbahul Zannat Fabiha; Peter Richings; Brian Chung Hao Ling; Greg Stevenson; Ike Bennell; Jenny Nguyen; Steve Harvey; Tekkiya Larkins; Brody Roper for facilitating the Cool Aeronautics workshop on the 21st of May. This program is supported by Office of the NSW Chief Scientist & Engineer, Transurban & University of Technology Sydney - which means there is no financial impact on stretched or non-existent school budgets. Thank Caryn Morgan from Engineers Australia for the unwavering attention to detail you provide in co-ordinating this activity. The highest launch from TEAM 5. Officially 13 metres but it looks higher!! Well done Team 5! #STEMforkids #STEMEducation #coolaeroau #space #propulsion

We had so much fun with students last week learning about propulsion with simple experiments, designing and building a rocket and measuring its altitude. As part of the activity students measured the height their rockets achieved in order to calculate the velocity, doing comparisons between weight, height and speed. Congratulations Team 5 for the highest launch of 13m! Thank you to our volunteers, Cody Dumka Royal Aeronautical Society Australian Division QLD Branch Student member and Lachlan Moore from our STEM Foundation partner Nova Systems Australia and New Zealand.
