About us

The Water Research Centre (WRC) undertakes multidisciplinary research in water and environmental engineering. Our researchers develop tools to improve the management and sustainability of aquatic and atmospheric environments. WRC had its beginnings over 60 years ago and in that time the scope of our research and activities has broadened substantially. Today we are one of the largest centres at UNSW and we have two locations serving more than 50 staff and supporting more than 70 PhD students.

We have a great event coming up on Monday 4th November at UNSW as part of the Living Water exhibit celebrating 75 years of water research here. Prof Rory Nathan will be giving the inaugural David Pilgrim lecture, reflecting on the pioneering research of Emeritus Professor David Pilgrim at UNSW, including his editorship of Australian Rainfall and Runoff. We will also have a panel discussion with A/Prof Stefan Felder and Wenhui (Vivian) WU reflecting on future directions for hydrology in teaching, research and practice. Congratulations to PhD student ZeinabBano AhaniAmineh who was invited by WaterNSW to present an online seminar about her project: "Impact of Longwall Coal Mining and Climate Conditions on Carbon Processes in Peatlands" Upland peat swamps are critical for carbon sequestration. Zeinab's work addresses significant knowledge gaps regarding how mining-induced drainage and various drought types—slow-developing and flash droughts—affect the release of carbon dioxide, methane, and dissolved organic carbon from these ecosystems. Through a combination of field investigations and mesocosm experiments, she aims to quantify how groundwater discharge and surface water connectivity influence carbon dynamics. This research seeks to enhance understanding of carbon cycling in peatlands, assess the impacts of mining, and improve evaluations of their role in climate change mitigation. Fantastic to see around 50 participants join the webinar and provide valuable feedback. A great example of industry-research collaboration! Lucky to be spending this week in beautiful Rarotonga for research on nature based solutions for flooding with UNSW Civil and Environmental Engineering honours student Olivia Bourke. Olivia ran a focus group yesterday for us to better understand perspectives from local catchment experts. Today we’ve been out in the field checking out the amazing work by Muri Environment Care on stream revegetation and their nursery. UNSW Water Research Centre

What were your favourite books as a child? If you loved the Mr. Men series, you will love the Micronovo series written by a leading microbiologist, UNSW Water Research Centre's own Professor Michael Manefield. The main character? Microorganisms! The collection has 7 titles to date, each telling the story of a different microorganism. How does the Micronovo series differ from other children's science books? Read Prof. Michael Manefield's response below: Science lessons woven into narrative: "Other science books for children present science lessons in a very simple format that children can digest. But they are recognisable as lessons. The Micronovo book series tells stories with microorganisms as the main characters. Like Mr Men books about microbes. The lesson is implicit in the narrative (rather than being presented explicitly as a lesson)." A spotlight on microbiology: "Also these books are all focussed on microbiology, which has been largely neglected. The books all contain an explainer page which shows a real microscope image of the organism the story is about and explains the facts that the story intends to convey." The Water@UNSW symposium returned this year as part of the UNSW 75th anniversary celebrations after a long hiatus and we were thrilled to have 8 WRC researchers pictured here presenting their work yesterday. Keynote speakers at the symposium were Dr Clare Stephens and Dr Michael Storey who shared their career journeys with the early career reseachers from across UNSW. Thanks to UNSW Global Water Institute for organising the event and Rafael Paulino, Shamim Aryampa, PhD and Naras Rao for their excellent MCing! The WRC researchers showcased the breadth of research in the WRC covering topics from Nature Based Solutions for flood management in the Pacific (Eleanor E.), sustainabilty of biosolids processing in Australia (Jingwen Luo) to bioremediation strategies for chlorinated solvents (Ranjith Kumar Rajendran, Ph.D). Marina Tedesco shared findings from her research on microfibres from textile washing. Thais Nunes Guerrero highlighted challenges from odour emissions for biosolids reuse and also on the odour theme, Rafael Paulino talked about management of taste and odour compounds using biologically activated carbon. Suraj Shah presented work on improving rainfall estimates by merging multiple sources of remotely sensed data.

Good times at Dehalocon4 in Guangzhou, China. This intimate conference brings the best scientists in the world working on microbial degradation of halogenated organics together to share their latest findings and insights. The field started in the 1980s in the US before Europe put its research weight behind it. My team joined the fray 20 years ago UNSW and we’ve all been training Chinese students who are now group leaders in China making great contributions. Thanks to the organisers. I might have accidentally volunteered to organise the next Dehalocon in Sydney in two years time. This will be great for Australia’s contaminated land and groundwater industry, our research community and ultimately human and environmental health.
