Troy McEwan writes: "New data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reveals one in seven adult Australians have been stalked in their lifetime: one in five women and one in 15 men. About 3-4% of women and 1-2% of men are victims of #stalking every year. Most stalking is perpetrated by people who are known to the victim, either as an acquaintance or an ex-partner, with strangers responsible for about 20-25% of stalking."
Stalking rates in Australia are still shockingly high – one simple strategy might help

Andrea de Silva and Amanda Robertson, PhD write: "The National Centre for Action on Child Sexual Abuse has released findings from more than 4,000 adults in a new study examining the community’s attitudes towards, knowledge of, and responses to #childsexualabuse. The data reveal some troubling findings, with pervasive and harmful community norms and attitudes that act to enable child sexual abuse to continue."

New data from a ten-year Australian population study, and specific data screening study published in the Medical Journal of Australia, show a significant need to screen for #reproductivecoercionandabuse (#RCA) in Australia. RCA has been referred to as a “hidden form of #violenceagainstwomen,” and describes behaviours used to control a person’s reproductive autonomy, to either prevent or promote pregnancy. New data shows RCA, along with #intimatepartnerviolence (#IPV), is a significant issue Australia-wide. #coercivecontrol

"When online violence or abuse occurs to people because of their gender or gender presentation, it falls under the umbrella term gender-based online violence and abuse, also known as tech-facilitated #genderbasedviolence. Unfortunately, incidents of this type of online violence seem to be increasing." Recent research findings by Jaigris Hodson, PhD and colleagues suggest that some men might not even recognise if and how they are complicit in gender-based online violence. #technologyfacilitatedabuse
Addressing online gender violence requires both culture and policy change

Stephanie Wescott, Alexandra Phelan, Naomi Pfitzner, Sarah McCook, Steve Roberts on tackling #genderedviolence in schools. "#Genderbasedviolence in schools is inextricably connected to the endemic levels of #violenceagainstwomen in Australia. We cannot separate a broader culture that enables gendered slurs, #misogyny and #genderinequity — known enablers of gender-based violence — from attitudes towards women and girls in schools."

Rawan Nimri, Phd SFHEA and colleagues examined how #sexualharassment is reported in newspapers across a number of countries published between 2017 and 2022 dealing with the treatment of hotel room attendants, airline cabin crew and massage therapists. "[U]niversally we found the terms used to describe victims were highly gendered and dated in ways that suggested subservience and undermined their professional skills." "In all cases, women were heavily featured as victims but never as aggressors. It is a #genderbias that does not match the established statistics, which show that almost one-quarter of aggressors are women. This misrepresentation creates a skewed understanding of who commits and suffers from sexual harassment. It has the potential to discourage victims of harassment by women from coming forward." #workplacesexualharassment
