About us
The UNSW Allens Hub for Technology, Law and Innovation, is an independent community of scholars based at UNSW Sydney. As a partnership between Allens and UNSW Law & Justice, the hub adds breadth and depth to research on the diverse interactions among technological change, law, and legal practice. The partnership enriches academic and policy debates and drives considered reform of law and practice through engagement with the legal profession, the judiciary, industry, government and the broader community. The Hub is also the home of FLIP Stream, a joint initiative of UNSW Law & Justice and the Law Society of New South Wales.

I spoke with ABC's Tom Williams about connected cars, the Wild West of consumer privacy - they might make you long to have your Peugeot 504 back, maybe even your 120Y. https://lnkd.in/gT2QgRAC Aaron Lewis Paul Hasenkam #carprivacy #connectedcars #consumerprivacy

LEANZ is kicking off the 2024 seminar series with the exceptional Dr Katharine Kemp to hear about her research on the privacy policy and settings of popular fertility apps used in Australia, and her findings that these practices are concerning, unsafe and unfair. Given the similarities between Australia and New Zealand's privacy legislation and the prevalence of similar apps, these findings are also relevant in Aotearoa. Register for the event and join us online on 8 Feb, 1230-130pm, I'm confident it will be a great use of your lunch break. https://lnkd.in/gNHiMDYc

🌟 UNSW AI Symposium 2023 🌟 The inaugural UNSW AI Symposium brought together some of the brightest minds from diverse areas of study to talk about the hottest topic on the planet right now 🤖, with each speaker sharing AI's impact and its applications in their respective fields. My highlights included: – 🏛 AI & Government – Dr Ian Oppermann's Plenary Talk: A fascinating look at how the NSW government is using AI for diverse issues, from improving transport systems to addressing family violence. His insights into NSW's AI strategy and upcoming assurance framework underscored our state’s (I’ve lived here four years now so I can say ‘our’) leadership in governmental AI implementation – ⚖ AI & Law – Panel Discussion: A thought-provoking session where Assistant Professor Dr Katharine Kemp discussed the potential of AI as a transformative tool for societal benefit. Adding to this, Professor Peter Leonard emphasized a shift in the onus of proof around AI – that the organisation that creates an AI tool is ultimately responsible for its output. – 📈 AI & Business – Dr Fei Huang's Presentation: An energising and enlightening talk on how AI is revolutionising the fairness, accuracy and accessibility of insurance services. – 📈 AI & Business – Callan Windsor's Presentation: In my favourite presentation of the day, Callan shared how one of the ways his team is leveraging natural language programming is to analyse the earnings calls of Australian businesses dating back to 1970. As someone whose Masters thesis studied a single set of EOFY results and how they were reported in the media, this was eye-opening 😲. The innovative approach provides deeper insights into market sentiment regarding demand, costs, prices and labour, showcasing the practical, impactful use of AI in economic analysis. Congrats to the UNSW AI Institute for hosting such an engaging and insightful event. It was an energising day filled with learning and networking, including the chance to meet Pepper… and thanks for the perfectly proportioned water bottle! #AI #Innovation #UNSW #Technology #futuresthinking
