To create our new Environmental Engineering degree, we asked industry leaders to pinpoint the essential qualities and skills for future environmental engineers. With our newest engineering degree, students will have the unique opportunity to build a strong foundation in Chemical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering. They will learn multidisciplinary knowledge and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills to drive the industry's future. Students can specialise in Chemical Engineering for the Environment, Energy and the Environment or Geotechnical Engineering. Last week, over 100 people from 8 different countries attended the John Grill Institute for Project Leadership's launch of our Major Projects Leadership Forum - Reform Roadmap! Developed in collaboration with the Australian Constructors Association (ACA) and Consult Australia, the Roadmap will transform the Australian major projects sector and drive the much-needed change the industry needs to ensure future success. In early August, 17 of our highest-achieving student leaders spent the week in Bangkok, Thailand at the University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) absorbing a range of talks and workshops alongside 500 other student leaders from across the globe. As part of the program, the students also got the chance to interact with local communities, visit local schools, plant mangroves, and spend the day at an Elephant sanctuary. We asked three students about their experience: “The USLS in Thailand was a truly transformative experience from expert talks to hands-on experience that directly benefitted local communities.” - William “The USLS conference was a truly transformative experience that greatly enhanced my leadership skills and strengthened my desire to make a positive social impact. Hearing from inspiring leaders and change-makers from around the world, and being exposed to critical global issues, was incredibly eye-opening.” - Kim “I realised that I am not too small to make a change and opportunities are everywhere! The symposium truly motivated me to be the change and embrace leadership for good.” - Srimayi On their return, the students will work with the co-curricular team to implement a project based on one of the key themes in the Symposium. #USYD #LeadershipForGood

Congratulations to Dr Arman Siavashi on receiving the Impact Award and People's Choice Award from the National Measurement Institute, Australia! Dr Siavashi is a University of Sydney Horizon Fellow and Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow. His research on clean energy and fuel (such as hydrogen) within the Faculty of Engineering's School of Aerospace, Mechanical, and Mechatronic Engineering is focused on high-precision measurement and its significant impact on our daily lives.

Meet Jiayi Wang, a Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Electrical Engineering) student at the Faculty of Engineering - University of Sydney. When asked why she loved her degree, she said: "I'm passionate about my degree because it lets me turn innovative ideas into real-world technology while mastering complex challenges that shape the future." Electrical engineering is a field that is experiencing rapid growth and is focused on harnessing electricity. This covers everything from computers and networking equipment enabling the internet to power stations that provide electricity to your home. Congratulations to the 2024 Humanitarian Innovation Hackathon winners and runner-ups! SydGong Solutions won first place and $5000 for their project, which focused on a specially designed tap nozzle to provide Pacific Island communities with water that is safe for drinking and sanitation. The team includes Casey Lockrey from the University of Sydney, Harrison Ledger from UNSW, Nicholas Chiaverini and Liam Harvey from the University of Wollongong. Second place went to Kesh, with Ellie June, Hannah Poon, Sophia Lee and Kathy Kim from the University of Sydney. Third place went to Team UC from the University of Canterbury with Wiseson Kuang, Vaughan Smart, Kien Ngo and Jessica Dixon. Celebrating the highlights from our 2024 Coding Fest, and congratulations to all the champions and runners-up.   For the first time, we had in-person international participants from the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology, Vietnam.
