The European Parliamentary Research Service recently released the briefing Powering the EU's future: Strengthening the battery industry. "Projections around battery manufacturing in the EU remain highly uncertain. Many reports claim that the EU is on track to meet its future battery needs, yet also highlight significant risks that could prevent this from happening. Factors such as rising energy and labour costs, incentives offered by third countries, slower-than-expected market developments, or difficult access to critical raw materials, could undermine the sector's competitiveness." BATTERY CIRCULARITY This white paper published by World Economic Forum, written in partnership with the Global Battery Alliance and RMI, identifies five changes needed to drive towards a circular battery economy: 1️⃣ Developing standardised, interoperable track-and-trace platforms. 2️⃣ Setting performance and data standards and financing R&D for design innovation that prioritises disassembly and recyclability alongside safety, cost and range. 3️⃣ Using targeted policy interventions to help overcome economic and technical barriers faced in recycling and second life. 4️⃣ Developing regional, circular value chains within a global circular economy, and facilitating responsible cross-border movement of batteries and battery materials. 5️⃣ Investing in the workforce needed for a circular battery economy by training and reskilling for circular jobs, integrating and preventing development of informal markets, and prioritising principles of just transition.
