✨ 𝗧𝗛𝗘𝗡 𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗡𝗢𝗪 - 𝟰𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻✨ Coimbra Group & Latin America – A lasting partnership 🎓🌎 For decades, the Coimbra Group has fostered deep collaboration between European and Latin American universities, shaping academic exchanges, research partnerships, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. What began in 1988 as alumni networks engaging 16,000+ members (Circulos Europeos) has grown into a rich, structured relationship with lasting impact. 📜 Key milestones in our journey: ➡ 1988: The Coimbra Group was entrusted by the European Communities to lead a dialogue with Latin American alumni of European universities. This resulted in 12 circles with 16,000+ active members, organizing conferences and discussions on topics like MERCOSUR and the European single market (photo) ➡ 1991: Launch of the TEMPUS Programme, expanding collaboration by adapting Erasmus-style exchanges to Latin America, strengthening mobility and academic cooperation ➡ 1992: Creation of the Task Force Latin America & signing of the 'Declaración de Granada', reinforcing academic cooperation ➡ 1994: Launch of the ALFA Programme, supporting student & researcher exchanges ➡ 2004: Introduction of the CG Latin America Scholarship Programme, expanding mobility opportunities (2025 call now open!) ➡ 2006: 'Leiden Rectors’ Declaration' advocating for an EU-LAC Knowledge Area; cooperation agreement signed with the Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo (still ongoing, with different activities and exchanges) ➡ 2021: Publication of 'Why Latin America Matters', underlining the region’s global significance ➡ 2024: Consejo Latinoamericano de Ciencias Sociales & Coimbra Group launch a new inter-institutional cooperation for research, education, and innovation. From early collaborations to today’s growing partnerships, Latin America remains a strategic priority for the Coimbra Group. As we celebrate #CG40Years, we look forward to continuing our shared commitment to academic excellence and societal impact across continents. #HigherEd #LatinAmerica #CG40Years #AcademicCooperation #Innovation #THENandNOW #EULAC Juan Manuel Sotelo Mara Constantinescu Soledad Garcia Ferrari

🎬 And this is a wrap! The “AI Ethics and Governance” open webinar, organized today by the Coimbra Group Equality & Diversity Working Group with the support of the Università degli Studi di Padova (UNIPD) / University of Padua, was a huge success. 👏 We are truly grateful to Francesca Rossi, IBM AI Ethics Global Leader, for her extremely instructive and enlightening keynote. Some insights: - "As #AI evolves, AI #ethics must evolve as well" - "The latest AI wave, of #AIAgents and agentic AI systems, amplifies some of the risks and challenges already identified" - "Developing #tools are just the beginning of building an AI #governance, the easiest part. The challenge is to involve #everyone, especially the non AI people, into the governance and ethics" - "Operationalising AI ethics and governance at institutional level is not just about being compliant with #regulation, it is also about going beyond and being proactive, building and exploiting AI #research #innovation to advance AI #value alignment, and joining multi-stakeholder #partnerships" 🙏 Many thanks as well to Coimbra Group's Working Groups colleagues: - Åsa Cajander, Professor of Human-Computer Interaction (Uppsala University) and Yvette Roman Roman, AI Governance Officer, (Utrecht University), our two respondents today for bringing perspectives from academia - Annalisa Oboe, Chair of CG Equality & Diversity WG, Professor of English and Postcolonial Literature (Università degli Studi di Padova (UNIPD) / University of Padua), main organiser, co-moderator and host of the webinar -Univ.-Prof. Dr. Beatrix Busse, CG Executive Board Vice-Chair, Professor of English Linguistics and the Vice-Rector for Student Affairs and Teaching University of Cologne, who opened the webinar and co-moderated the discussion. 🙏 And very many thanks to all online attendees for your massive participation and thought-provoking questions! -- 💡 This webinar is one of several initiatives led by the Coimbra Group and its Working Groups to advance discussions on #AI in #highereducation and strengthen #collaboration among CG member universities on these issues, including the High Level Policy Seminar on “(Generative) AI in Higher Education” in November 2024 at Alexandru Ioan Cuza University and the establishment of an AI Inter-Working Group in June 2024. 👉 https://lnkd.in/enXhqyQc -- Henna Virkkunen Maria Leptin Thomas Ekman Jørgensen Eva Maydell (Paunova) Marietje Schaake European University Association The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities CESAER SwissCore SPARC Europe ALLEA – The European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities Alex Moltzau Lucilla Sioli Gosia (Malgorzata) Nikowska David Arranz

🌱 The Coimbra Group is looking forward to the 40th Anniversary Climate Symposium. Durham University is hosting the event, which will also initiate the celebrations for the network's 40th Anniversary. 🎂 The central theme for the two-day Climate Symposium will be the role of universities as agents of transformative change for climate, nature, planetary health and society. Renowned experts will reflect on the role of universities at the forefront of efforts to combat climate change and embed sustainability in all areas of life, and that it is now more urgent than ever that we address the climate emergency through research, education and policy engagement. The Durham Symposium will deliver a long-lasting legacy through a Durham Declaration, which will shape both the CG’s and the wider sector’s response to climate change. We will gather Coimbra Group rectors in Durham to agree on concrete #actions to enhance further the role of universities as agents of transformative change for #climate, nature, planetary health and #society. 🌍 We are also engaging students as drivers of change and looking forward to check the results of this game 👇 #CGClimateSymposium #DurhamDeclaration #ClimateChange #sustainability #SDGs #research #education #innovation Karen O’Brien Emma Moore Prof. Dr. Ludovic THILLY Petra Minnerop Annetje Ottow Jane Stout Dr. Max Jungmann Anna Gumbau Harriet Bulkeley Lenka Henebergová Patrícia Pereira da Silva Susan Simon Mari Sundli Tveit Sam Barratt Teresa Sauras Yera Antonella Forlino Kirk Junker Karin Rebel 🟥 Lana Par Marjo Kaartinen Sébastien Castelltort Léonore Moncond'huy Michele Acuto Daniel Donoghue,
Universities as Agents of Change: Coimbra Group 40th Anniversary Climate Symposium. How can universities drive real change in tackling the climate emergency? This month, we're bringing together Rectors and Vice-Chancellors from across Europe for the Coimbra Group 40th Anniversary Climate Symposium - a major event focused on the role of universities in shaping a sustainable future. Students are also at the heart of these discussions. Ahead of the Symposium, we invited teams to take part in ‘Eyes of the Future’, an innovative app-based sustainability competition developed by our Coimbra Group partners, Universiteit Utrecht. Through interactive challenges and SDG-focused gameplay, students explored new ways to envision a greener future. Congratulations to the winning teams: - ‘EnviroTeam’ from the University of Iași, Romania - Team ‘Wet Zero’ from the Universitetet i Bergen (UiB), Norway Both teams will join university leaders at the Symposium to share their perspectives on sustainability and climate action. Will the successor to #HorizonEurope be (part of) the European Competitiveness Fund (#ECF) and if so, what will be the modalities? In any ECF scenario, we need "sufficient safeguards for budget stability, the independence of the European Research Council (ERC), bottom-up science, pre-competitive collaborative research, and interdisciplinarity” says #kuleuven Vice Rector Jan D'hooge in Euractiv 👇
