Responsible for securing an integrated, accessible national sustainable transport network.

About us

The NTA keeps Ireland moving. We’re a statutory, non-commercial, organisation reporting to the Department of Transport and responsible to the people of Ireland. Our job is to supervise the provision and regulation of public passenger land transport services, including state-subsidised bus and rail services through Bus Éireann, Dublin Bus, Go-Ahead Ireland and Irish Rail. We also provide Luas tram services in Dublin by contract, license commercial bus services and regulate the small public service vehicle sector (taxis, hackneys and limousines). On the national stage, the NTA manages the Rural Transport Programme and transport co-ordination units (TFI Local Link). We provide integrated / multi-modal ticketing (TFI Leap Card), journey planning information, real-time-passenger-information, mapping, and are improving integration of public transport fares. We prepare submissions on regional planning guidelines and on other significant planning proposals throughout Ireland, undertake strategic planning of transport investments in all public transport infrastructure and develop the effective management of traffic and transport demand. To keep you in the picture, we collect and publish statistics and information on transport and enforce EU passenger rights in rail, maritime and bus and coach transport. The NTA also undertakes a number of functions on a non-statutory basis, including planning and funding sustainable transport projects in Cork, Galway, Limerick and Waterford, administering the Smarter Travel Workplaces programme, managing the Green Schools Travel programme and providing accessibility funding to transport operators and other relevant bodies. And that’s how we keep Ireland moving.

  • The Liffey Cycle Route is expanding! The NTA, in collaboration with Dublin City Council is proud to have funded and delivered the George’s Quay to Aston Quay cycle route, a key project in the enhancement of Dublin City’s Active Travel Network. The expected final cost of the route is €5.5M, coming in at approximately 18% under budget and ahead of schedule. The George’s Quay to Aston Quay Cycle section will:  •Provide improved segregated two-way cycle facilities from Talbot Bridge to O’Connell Bridge •Improve crossing facilities for cyclists and pedestrians; for instance, by eliminating the pedestrian island at O’Connell Bridge junction  •Encourage walking and cycling in the area by providing improved facilities •Contribute to a reduction in transport emissions in line with the Climate Action Plan by encouraging a modal shift to active travel and public transport use The route was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain and includes the upgrading of the existing road layout to improve walking and cycling facilities.  Joe Seymour, Assistant Director Transport Planning and Investment at the National Transport Authority, said: “Dublin’s quays are a bustling hive of activity on any given day. Whether it’s people heading to work, to catch a bus or to criss-cross the city and enjoy all that Dublin has to offer, the area is a huge draw for people who are walking, wheeling or on a bicycle. Working closely with our partners in Dublin City Council, the NTA is investing in creating a safer, more pleasant and enjoyable environment along the Liffey and this scheme is a great example of what can be achieved.” #ActiveTravel

  • Passenger boardings in areas of Dublin where the new BusConnects network has been implemented are up 40% compared to the rest of the network, according to a report published today by the National Transport Authority (NTA). Progress includes: - 12% increase in places of employment are now reachable within 30 minutes - 110 fully-operational electric buses, saving 1900 tonnes of CO2 emissions - 90-minute fare used almost 30 million times by bus passengers in 2024 - 11 of 12 Core Bus Corridors (CBC schemes received planning approval by An Bord Pleanála NTA Interim CEO Hugh Creegan said: “The delivery of BusConnects is a key component of NTA’s Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area, 2022-2042 and along with DART+, MetroLink and investment in new Luas lines. The growth in passenger numbers we are seeing is very encouraging and is a clear indication that members of the travelling public are responding positively to the improved service levels and greater connectivity that BusConnects offers. The BusConnects Dublin Programme has already delivered significant passenger benefits, but there’s more to be done. The introduction of bus priority along the Core Bus Corridors and the new ticketing system will shorten journey times, and improve punctuality and reliability, making travel by bus an even more attractive option.” Visit: https://lnkd.in/euHG7K_r
