We connect Europe and cities

About us

With Eurocities, it’s all in our name: we connect Europe and cities. We are convinced that this connection leads to a better life for all. Founded in 1986, our network brings together the local governments of more than 200 cities in 38 European countries, representing 130 million people. Eurocities provides a platform to share knowledge and ideas, to exchange experiences, to analyse common problems and develop innovative solutions, through a wide range of forums, working groups, projects, activities and events. Eurocities gives cities a voice in Europe, by engaging in dialogue with the European institutions on all aspects of EU legislation, policies and programmes that have an impact on cities and their citizens. The network is active across a wide range of policy areas including: economic development and cohesion policy, provision of public services, environment, transport and mobility, employment and social affairs, culture, education, information and knowledge society, governance and international cooperation.

  • At Eurocities, we continue to advocate for strong local involvement, dedicated funding, and advisory support to address the housing and climate crises Explore the key takeaways from our latest discussions. ⬇️

The EU institutions are increasingly discussing the housing crisis as we saw yesterday in the EMPL-REGI hearing and previously in the first discussion with Commissioner Dan Jørgensen in the Special Housing Committee. Challenges are many, but so are the opportunities! More specifically, discussions around the need for adequate and well-earmarked funding coupled with advisory services and a strong involvement of local authorities can support the roll out of inclusive and ambitious renovation projects that can alleviate the pressure of the ongoing housing and climate crises 🏘️ This and more was discussed during CAN Europe, Eurocities and BEUC - The European Consumer Organisation webinar - in case you missed it, here is a link to the recording of the session and a briefing with the main takeaways 👉 https://lnkd.in/e_tZxxbZ

Day 2️⃣ of the Mobility Forum in Riga brought together politicians across Europe in a high-level meeting to take local perspectives, insights and recommendations to influence future EU transport policies. 🟢 Cities are innovative, leveraging different EU funding sources like Resilience & Recovery Facility, EIB loans, Cohesion Fund to finance transport projects according to their needs and capacity.  🟢 Cities are calling for the renewal of key funding instruments under the next EU budget, such as the CEF Transport Programme, as well as more local autonomy and direct access to EU funding. 🟢 Substantial co-funding and reporting requirements create additional burdens for cities. Direct access is limited, and some cities struggle with administrative capacity to even apply for funding. 📣 Cities want a say in the next EU budget! Given budget limitations and the national plan approach, cities urge the European Commission to involve them in designing and implementing the upcoming 2027 national plans.

  • 🚨 City leaders in the Eurocities network have expressed their strong support for and solidarity with Ekrem İmamoğlu, Mayor of Istanbul, following his arrest by Turkish police. “European mayors stand side by side with the Mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İmamoğlu,” says Burkhard Jung, President of Eurocities and Mayor of Leipzig. “His detention is the latest in a series of actions aimed at undermining his political leadership and his role as mayor. Turkey must uphold democratic principles.” 👉 https://lnkd.in/eBQmrH8M

Imagine if the City of #Turku, a climate leader, waited until the last minute to take climate action? 🌍 ❗   As our comic strip below shows, it might seem like a funny situation – but in reality it’s no joke.    We simply cannot delay on climate action! The consequences for our cities and people will be disastrous. City leaders welcome the new EU Clean Industrial Deal, a positive step towards Europe’s industrial transformation. But this is not enough. Ursula von der Leyen, Wopke Hoekstra and Teresa Ribera ➡️ You must ensure an ambitious, legally binding carbon emissions reduction target of at least 90% by 2040. 🔗 Read our article 👉 https://lnkd.in/eEN4eC3q 🖥️ And watch our comic strip below - featuring a strong climate message from Minna Arve, Mayor of Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku 👇   #Climate2040 #LocalFutureEU #CleanIndustrialDeal
