On 8 October, we were honoured to feature an inspiring message from MEP Victor NEGRESCU at the Central and Eastern European Health & Fitness Summit 2024. His powerful insights spoke directly to the vital role of the fitness sector in improving both physical and mental health, and how it can play a key part in reducing healthcare costs across Europe. In his role as Vice-President of the European Parliament and member of the Public Health subcommittee, MEP Negrescu highlighted the crucial need for strong policy support at the European level to enable the fitness and physical activity sector to thrive and contribute meaningfully to public health outcomes. His emphasis on the importance of collaboration between governments, the fitness industry, and other stakeholders serves as a call to action for us all, encouraging continued efforts to promote healthier, more active lifestyles across Europe. We are deeply grateful for his commitment to an increased EU4Health budget where prevention must feature prominently, and for reinforcing the impact of our collective work in the fitness sector. We were delighted to participate in the Health Summit hosted by The Parliament Magazine in Brussels. While key discussions focused on strategic autonomy, competitiveness, equitable access to healthcare, digitalisation, and the role of AI, it was encouraging to see prevention and mental health getting the attention they deserve. The summit brought together top policymakers and experts to explore actionable solutions and set the agenda for the next EU mandate, while also reflecting on the achievements of the outgoing Commission. Stella Kyriakides, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, emphasised the crucial need to continue implementing key actions under the EU's Beating Cancer Plan, and expressed her hope that health will continue to be a central priority in future EU mandate. MEP Andras Kulja MD stressed the need to boost health literacy and build trust between people and their healthcare systems, while MEP Tilly Metz voiced concerns about a reduced EU health budget in the next MFF and the critical need for increased public-private partnerships in R&D to improve access to care. We were particularly inspired by MEP Stine Bosse's strong advocacy for keeping prevention and healthy lifestyles high on the EU public health agenda. At EuropeActive, we believe that governments must invest more in prevention-driven healthcare, with physical activity at its core. This has the potential to not only enhance physical and mental well-being but also provide much-needed relief to Europe's healthcare systems. MEP Maria Walsh and MEP Marta Temido reaffirmed their commitment to prioritising mental health within the EU and emphasised the need to integrate it across all EU policies. At EuropeActive, we fully support this agenda, as regular physical activity plays a crucial role in boosting mental and emotional well-being. The fitness sector is vital in helping reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, while improving mood and cognitive function. Let’s continue working together towards healthier and happier lives for all! Stay tuned for more updates on EU health policy, and check out some event highlights below! 🌍 Exciting times for the European Week of Clean Sport project! This week, we had the pleasure of meeting with our consortium partners in Sofia 🇧🇬 to discuss the progress and successes of the initiative. The campaign, which took place in April 2024 across Poland, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Portugal, was a tremendous success! 🎉 The European Week of Clean Sport (EWCS) is an anti-doping initiative designed to combat doping in sports, which threatens fundamental values and poses severe health risks to athletes. In line with Erasmus+ Programme priorities, the project brings together anti-doping agencies and experts to develop an effective, inclusive campaign that raises awareness and promotes integrity in sports. Through educational and communication strategies, the EWCS strives to reshape the sporting landscape by ensuring clean and fair play. Throughout the campaign, participants had the chance to engage in a variety of activities—big runs, school lessons, workshops, and presentations—highlighting the importance of clean values in sport. 💪 Communities were inspired to stand up for fair play, and we can't wait to share all the results at the conference in January, co-organized by EuropeActive! #CleanSport #FairPlay #EuropeActive #SportIntegrity #ConsortiumMeeting #Sofia #EuropeanWeekOfCleanSport

🇭🇺 The 2024 European Week of Sport has officially kicked off! Yesterday's Opening Ceremony at the National Athletic Centre in Budapest (Hungary) showcased the power of physical activity and sport to bring people together across generations and sectors. Today, the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union hosts its international conference on the Legacy of Major Sporting Events. 🗣 Dr. Adam Schmidt (Secretary State for Sport, Hungary) presented how Hungary prioritised sport and physical activity (SPA) as a strategic sector through the development and implementation of the Sporting Nation Strategy, which spans from SPA access, community events, professionals support, to hosting sporting events and planning their legacies. 🏛 Georg Häusler (Director for Culture, Creativity and Sport, DG EAC) celebrated the European Week of Sport’s 10th edition that is currently unrolling across 39 countries, with focuses on Mega Sport Event legacy and on sustainability. It was, however, stressed that physical inactivity levels remain high, particularly for children as educational systems do not cater for more movement throughout the day. 🏅 Juan Antonio Samaranch (Vice-President, International Olympic Committee) reflected on the Paris 2024 Games that were a global sensation, watched by over half the world's population. He emphasised the equal gender participation in the Games and the impressive 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the London 2012 Games. He further pleaded for a long due change in perspective from governments: to approach and budget SPA as an investment in health and not a financial expense. Stay tuned for our #BEACTIVEDAY highlights! 💜 #BeActive #EuropeanWeekOfSport #Inclusion #OlympicValues #SportForAll #HealthAndWellBeing #Paris2024 #SportingLegacy #Sustainability
