Magda Kopczyńska, the Director General of DG MOVE at the European Commission delivered an insightful address focusing on the vital role of people within the European maritime, ports, and transport industry. In her talk, she emphasised several key points that highlight the industry's future challenges and opportunities. She stated unequivocally that without people, the policies we implement cannot come to fruition. This highlights the fundamental importance of human resources in driving initiatives forward. Ms Kopczyńska acknowledged the significant challenge of attracting young talent to the sector. However, she stressed that it is not enough to simply bring them in; we must also prioritise their retention to ensure a vibrant workforce in the years to come. Looking ahead, she called for the development of robust strategies that extend into 2040 and beyond, indicating a need for forward-thinking approaches that consider long-term sustainability of recruiting people. Additionally, she touched on themes of competitiveness and strategic independence, suggesting that these elements are crucial for the future resilience and success of Europe. We were thrilled to cohost a dynamic side session at the European Shipping Summit (ESS) focused on the important theme of Decarbonisation Beyond Technology. Our conversation was inspired by an exciting project we're working on, called GREENPORT Alliances. This initiative aims to tackle emissions in the port sector by fostering meaningful behavioral change. Together, we're not just discussing technology; we're tapping into the power of people to drive sustainability forward! We thank our co hosts FEPORT, European Dredging Association - EuDA, European Tugowners Association for making this session a success.
