EUsalt is the association of European and global crystallised salt producers.

About us

We've been around for a quite some time: - Salt has been used since Ancient times for many purposes, especially in food - EUsalt is the non-profit association that represents the common interests of salt producers before the European institutions. We've been in Brussels since 2004, relentlessly encouraging a better understanding of salt, what it does, and the role it plays in our lives. We also act as a platform for exchange between the salt industry and European and international players. We represent all production methods of crystallised salt (sodium chloride), i.e. solar salt works, rock mining, and solution mining.

🌍🇪🇺 Being part of the first European Parliament plenary session after the election is a great opportunity. This election marked a milestone with many Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) being elected for the first time. The last European Parliament supported EUsalt and rejected the 'organic salt' delegated act. This action demonstrated the power of democracy and highlighted that the voices of trade associations should be heard, ensuring consumers are not misled. For EUsalt, this is a pivotal moment. Our role as a trade association extends beyond advocacy; we are the bridge between policymakers and industries, ensuring that the voices of businesses, both large and small, are heard and considered. This is why it is so important to be at this first session and familiarize ourselves with the new MEPs. Our engagement from the start is crucial for forging future collaborations. As we embark on this new legislative journey, let’s remember the power of collective action and the importance of our roles in shaping a prosperous and sustainable future for Europe. #EuropeanParliament #TradeAssociations #Advocacy #EPlenary #CollectiveAction

🧂 🩺 Iodine Deficiency Awareness As illustrated in the WHO and IGN report, insufficient intake results in iodine deficiency, thyroid disorders and, during pregnancy, risk of lasting intellectual impairment that reduces a child’s IQ. Lifestyle choices and dietary trends are contributing to persistent, and in some countries increased, insufficient iodine intakes. Salt iodization remains the main strategy to ensure adequate iodine intake in the European Region.  Ensuring the use of iodized salt in all food products is a simple yet effective measure to safeguard our health. Iodine matters. Salt matters. #noSalternative

Is your salt iodized? Processed food and plant-based diets often lack #iodine, raising deficiency risks across all the WHO European Region. Countries need better policies in line with the changing eating behaviours. New report from WHO/Europe and Iodine Global Network proposes several steps: ✅Mandatory salt iodization: Advocate for stricter regulations requiring universal iodization of food-grade salt across the European Region. ✅Keeping salt under control. Integration of salt reduction and salt iodization measures are crucial ✅Fortification standards. Establish clear standards for iodine fortification levels in processed foods, including bread, processed meats, and ready-to-eat meals. ✅Focus on plant-based alternatives. Implement programs in support of food producers who fortify plant-based milk and dairy alternatives with iodine. Read more 👇 https://bit.ly/4cELWoh

🧂 🩺 Prevention and control of iodine deficiency in the World Health Organization European Region The #WHO and Iodine Global Network (IGN) have just released a critical report highlighting the vital role of iodized salt in preventing iodine deficiency. Despite changing dietary trends and lifestyles, salt iodization remains the keystone strategy for ensuring adequate iodine intake in Europe. Adults and pregnant women in countries with voluntary or no salt iodization are particularly at risk.  Variation in national salt iodization regulations and inadequate monitoring are stalling progress in optimizing iodine intake. Regular surveillance and updated data are essential for sustained progress. Dr. Werner Schultink, IGN Executive Director, adds, “Even mild iodine deficiency has a major impact on population health and the economy.” Ensuring the use of iodized salt in all food products is a simple yet effective measure to safeguard our health. #EUsalt is committed to supporting initiatives that promote the importance of salt iodization.  Learn more about the causes, consequences, and solutions to this ongoing issue in the latest WHO & IGN report 👉 https://lnkd.in/dqYpnNPc #WHA2024 #SaltIodization #IodineDeficiency

🧂 🩺 Iodised salt and World Health Assembly Two weeks ago, EUsalt - represented by our colleague Ana Rivas Valero - was pleased to have participated in the event focused on the Prevention and Control of #IodineDeficiency in the World Health Organization European Region. The event, organized by the WHO Regional Office for Europe and the Iodine Global Network and supported by Kiwanis International, took place in Geneva and shed light on crucial insights from their latest report. 📊 Some key highlights from the report: - Salt Iodization: Despite changing dietary trends and lifestyles, salt iodization remains the keystone strategy for ensuring adequate iodine intake in Europe. Adults and pregnant women in countries with voluntary or no salt iodization are particularly at risk.  - Public Awareness: There is a significant gap in understanding the health impacts of iodine deficiency and the importance of iodized salt among the public, health professionals, and food producers.  - National Regulations and Surveillance: Variation in national salt iodization regulations and inadequate monitoring are stalling progress in optimizing iodine intake. Regular surveillance and updated data are essential for sustained progress.  - Current Success and Future Challenges: Thanks to salt iodization, school-age children in most European countries have adequate iodine levels. However, the future requires consistent efforts to maintain and enhance iodine intake through comprehensive strategies and public health policies. EUsalt, together with IGN, is committed to advocating for and supporting initiatives that promote the importance of salt iodization.  #WHA2024
