Unlocking the potential of entrepreneurial farming in the Global South by providing equity or quasi equity
About us
Some producer organisations in the South make impressive social and economic progress. They have become catalysts for development. But as these organisations grow and expand, they face a huge obstacle: lack of access to capital. They have outgrown the microfinance market, but are still too small and fragile to be eligible for the traditional investment market or even for most social investors. They are confronted with the so called missing middle. Kampani stands out from other social investors thanks to an audacious combination of strategic choices: – Investing directly and strengthening the balance sheet of the investee through the use of equity or quasi-equity – A long investment horizon of up to 10 years – Only in the agro-food value chain – Active involvement in the governance of the investee – Small investment amounts (100k to 500k euros) This pioneering combination of strategic choices constitutes Kampani’s unique selling proposition. Having built a rather exceptional ecosystem via its shareholders – comprising most of the relevant players in Belgium – and a limited number of close partners, Kampani is convinced it can face the challenges inherent to this approach. For instance, Kampani sources its deals exclusively via this network. This generates significant cost savings and accelerates the trust building between Kampani and the investee.

The new Council on Smallholder Agricultural Finance (CSAF) 2023 State of the Sector Report is out! 📢 The report analyzes lending data and insights from the portfolios of 19 financial institutions (including Kampani) serving #agricultural #SMEs. We invite you to learn more about sectoral trends by downloading the report below and by participating in the webinar on July 31 at 10AM EDT / 2PM GMT / 4PM CEST!
Our new 2024 State of the Sector Report reviews 2023 lending activity across 19 financial institutions, totaling $697 million to over 675 businesses across 55 countries. The report analyzes the risks & challenges #agriSMEs face today, and how agricultural lenders are responding. Four key trends from 2023: 1️⃣ Lending volume decreased, though the number of borrowers grew slightly – particularly across clients borrowing less than $250K. 2️⃣ Risk increased, driven by borrower challenges amid overlapping crises. In particular, risk increased in South America and Africa and for loans greater than $1M. 3️⃣ Coffee activity saw its steepest drop in the past decade. Driven by a volatile market and significant challenges in Peru, coffee disbursements dropped by $86M. 4️⃣ Lenders have increased technical assistance to help borrowers mitigate risk – investing in clients through increased business development services, especially to increase management capacity and build climate resilience. An exciting day for staff, stakeholders and partners of AMAATI, as we gathered to launch our New Fonio production line in collaboration with USAID West Africa Trade & Investment Hub. AMAATI partnered with USAID West Africa Trade and Investment Hub to work on a project “Fonio for nutrition and Export”. A matching grant purposefully used to engage and support rural women and men including the youth to participate in Fonio farming and other activities on the Fonio value chain. 7000+ farmers were engaged for 30 months, supported with inputs to farm Fonio. This resulted in high volumes of Fonio supplies indicating the need for AMAATI to match the grant by investing in increasing our capacity to absorb supplies from smallholder farmers. Through the investment we received from Kampani, AMAATI invested in a state of the art 10-ton Fonio production line to absorb the increasing supplies from smallholder farmers and increase our quality standards. This was part of our strategy to increase capacity and quality of our products for our customers to have a unique experience consuming DIM Fonio products both locally and internationally. The project ending this may 2024, was climaxed with the launch of the new 10 metric tons’ production line on May 29, 2024. We had participation from smallholder farmers, Chiefs, community members, government officials, and partners. This processing plant will serve 30,000+ smallholder farmers in the rural savannah zone of Ghana, ensuring food security, increasing employment among women and youth, reducing poverty, and ensuring families have nutrient dense food for nutrition security. Special thank you to Grace Lang-Deputy Mission Director for USAID Ghana, Charles Polet- Deputy Director West African Trade and Investment Hub, Tia Swain- communication specialist at the West African Trade and Investment Hub, Kofi Asare Anyemedu-private sector engagement specialist USAID Ghana. This program was graced by Naa Mahamadu Bawah –Paramount Chief of the Nanton Traditional Area, AMAATI Board Chairman- Chief Sintaro Mahama and other board members. This represents our continued commitment in creating sustainable communities through the use of Fonio which nourishes the land, people and society.
