KDIGO is pleased to share the publication of the final report from the KDIGO Controversies Conference on the Role of Complement in Kidney Disease. Read the news release: https://lnkd.in/eynbGVqE Download the report: https://lnkd.in/ezA95Hr4 Read the report in Kidney International: https://lnkd.in/eEhdYujn Co-chaired by Marina Vivarelli, MD (Italy) and Richard Smith, MD (United States) in Florence, Italy, in 2022, the conference gathered leading nephrologists, researchers, patients, and caregivers to discuss the latest evidence and future directions for managing complement-mediated kidney diseases, particularly aHUS, C3G, AAV, IgAN, SLE, FSGS, and diabetic nephropathy. Dr. Smith said, "It is clear that we need a concerted, multinational effort to make meaningful progress in our understanding and treatment of these mostly rare and heterogeneous kidney diseases. We need to identify biomarkers of complement activation and dysregulation, standardize their measurement, and promote their global implementation...This collaborative approach will enable us to offer early, accurate diagnosis and safe, effective, and affordable treatment tailored to individual patients." Dr. Vivarelli said, "The presence of patients and their caregivers was invaluable. Their stories and experiences brought a profound human element to our discussions by reminding us of the real-world implications of our research and the importance of patient-centered care. Their contributions emphasized the need for therapies that address the medical aspects of these diseases and improve the quality of life for those affected." #Complement #Glomerular #aHUS #C3G #FSGS #IgAN #AAV #ANCA #vasculitis #lupus #nephritis #diabetes #nephropathy #CKD

KDIGO invites you to comment on the Scope of Work (SOW) for the KDIGO Controversies Conference on the Relationship Between Obesity and CKD: Pathophysiology, Prognosis, and Management. The SOW will be available for public review through Monday, August 5. The SOW and feedback form can be found on the conference website: https://lnkd.in/ed8AVrVu The conference, co-chaired by Dr. Susan Furth (Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, United States) and Dr. Peter Rossing (Steno Diabetes Center Copenhagen and University of Copenhagen, Denmark), will be held in Prague, Czechia, from October 10 to 13. Obesity is a driver for diabetes and hypertension, the two leading causes of CKD in most countries, and obesity may also directly induce CKD. Treatment with an optimized diet and exercise is preferred but often difficult to sustain. While recent trials have shown positive outcomes in metabolic surgery or pharmacological interventions with substantial weight reductions maintained, questions remain about the relationship between obesity and CKD, how their coexistence relates to diagnosis, and optimal strategies for management, especially in people with CKD. This conference will bring together key thought leaders, patients, caregivers, and global experts from multiple disciplines to review the literature and current state of understanding in this area and address clinical issues as outlined in the SOW. The conference will involve topical plenary session presentations followed by focused discussion groups that will report back to the full group for consensus building. KDIGO thanks you for your time and insights. #obesity #ckd
