🇪🇺 A call for supporting carbon removals in the next EU mandate 🇪🇺 Together with 44 other organisations, the Negative Emissions Platform has written to Climate Commissioner-designate Wopke Hoekstra ahead of his confirmation hearing in the European Parliament urging him to adopt a set of policies to support a sustainable scale-up of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in the next EU mandate. Here are our 4 key recommendations: 1️⃣ Set separate targets for emissions reductions and carbon removals in the revision of the Climate Law 2️⃣ Boost CDR funding to scale up both early- and later-stage technologies Provide clarity for buyers of CDR in the Green Claims Directive, strengthening the integrity of climate claims 3️⃣ Create stable demand for carbon removals through a compliance market and long-term policy support 4️⃣ Carbon removals are vital for reaching net zero. With the new European Commission being formed, this is a pivotal moment to ensure carbon removals become a pillar in Europe’s fight against climate change. Negative Emissions Platform
Government Relations
Negative Emissions Platform works towards a better political recognition of carbon removal technologies and solutions.
About us
The Negative Emissions Platform is a Brussels-based partnership to improve the political and public recognition of carbon removal technologies and solutions. We represent technology developers, providers and sponsors, research centers, academia, think-tanks and the civil society. Our main focus is on engineered and hybrid approaches with a potential for permanent removal of CO2 - direct air capture and bio-energy with carbon capture and storage, enhanced weathering on land and in the oceans, biochar, soil carbon sequestration, mineralisation in building materials and the use of wood in lasting products and materials. We also actively promote the use of atmospheric CO₂ in e-fuels, materials and chemicals as a way of closing the carbon cycle, while delivering the economies of scale and cost reductions for atmospheric capture technologies. Membership in Negative Emissions Platform is open to a wide range of organisations (varying fees apply), providing they meet the following criteria: They fully support the platform objectives. They are, or want to become active in Europe as a technology developer, retailer, distributor, promoter or sponsor or; They are a national research entity, higher education institution, think-tank or civil society organisation dedicated fully or partially to contributing to research, advocacy and communication in the area of negative emission technologies. 👉 Weekly CDR Picks from our Board Members! Each week, a member of the NEP Board will recommend a must-watch documentary or video series that sheds light on cutting-edge solutions for carbon dioxide removal. This week, we’re excited to share a recommendation from our Vice-President Dirk Paessler (Carbon Drawdown Initiative)! 🪄 Dirk’s pick? A powerful video that dives into the potential of biochar for both agriculture and carbon storage. This technology doesn’t just enhance soil health and water retention, it also stores CO₂, effectively turning agricultural land into a sustainable carbon sink. The video dives into how biochar could help the world achieve CO₂ neutrality, with key statistics on soil health improvements, yield increases, and its role in removing emissions. 🌐 Watch the video here: https://lnkd.in/d4vsNYWp As a sector rich in biochar expertise, we’re proud to count Novocarbo, Carbo Culture, Standard Gas Technologies Ltd, Circular Carbon, and key industry associations Bioenergy Europe and the European Biochar Industry Consortium (EBI) among our members. Biochar is just one of many approaches to CDR that we’re exploring together to scale climate solutions. Stay tuned for more weekly recommendations from NEP’s Board, sharing diverse perspectives on the sustainable growth of our industry!

📢 Before the week gets away from us, we want to congratulate AFEN on their excellent 2024 Carbon Removal Meetings! Our Secretary General, Chris Sherwood, was honoured to attend and connect with colleagues and friends. 🌍 With nearly 200 participants, the event fostered important discussions on carbon removal technologies, public policy, and investment opportunities. AFEN’s 2025 goals—implementing a national carbon removal strategy and enhancing both public and private funding—are crucial to advancing climate action. 🤝 We’re looking forward to future collaborations and thank all the speakers, partners, and solution providers!

Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) is the missing piece of the 🧩climate puzzle. Achieving net-zero emissions by 2️⃣ 0️⃣ 5️⃣ 0️⃣ is impossible without the rapid scaling of CDR technologies. However, the CDR space remains vastly underfunded. 🤝 We are incredibly grateful to Breakthrough Energy for their generous grant and for recognising the urgent need to address this financing gap. With their support, we can continue our work to ensure that CDR receives the attention and resources it critically needs to become a central part of the climate solution.

🚨 New Policy Brief: The Role of Carbon Removals in the European Climate Law 🚨 The European Climate Law serves as a central component of the European Green Deal, setting a legally binding target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This means that any remaining emissions will need to be balanced by equivalent amounts of carbon removals. To meet this challenge, the EU has committed to negative emissions after 2050, making carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) essential. As we approach key milestones like the 2030 target of a 55% reduction in net GHG emissions, and with the European Commission endorsing a 90% reduction target for 2040, it’s crucial that carbon removals are properly integrated into the EU’s climate strategy. Our latest policy brief dives into: ➖ The growing role of permanent carbon removals in the EU’s climate targets. ➖The potential of permanent carbon removal solutions to meet future demand. ➖The importance of differentiating between short-term and long-term removals to ensure the EU's carbon neutrality goals are met. 📥 Download the full brief to learn more about how the European Climate Law is shaping the future of CDR: 📎 https://lnkd.in/d-9xSnFA

🙌 We're excited to welcome RWE to the Negative Emissions Platform! 🙌 With a bold vision to achieve net-zero by 2040, RWE is already one of the leading players in renewable energy. Through its Growing Green strategy, RWE is driving the global energy transition with a €55 billion investment in wind, solar, batteries, flexible generation, and hydrogen projects, aiming for 65 GW of green capacity by 2030. RWE is also making strides in carbon dioxide removal (CDR), with its BECCUS projects at Eemshaven and Amer power plants. These projects, capturing and storing 11-14 Mt of CO₂ annually, will contribute significantly to Dutch climate targets while ensuring future energy security. By capturing CO2 from sustainable biomass and storing it deep beneath seabeds, RWE is advancing negative emissions technology that’s vital for achieving net zero. The CO2 captured could also be repurposed in the future for biofuels and bioplastics, highlighting its potential for sustainable innovation. 🤝 We're looking forward to collaborating with RWE as they continue to lead on climate action and CDR innovation. Welcome to the NEP community!
