Why do insects circle lights at night? A new study found that it is the unfortunate consequence of a neat trick that evolved over millions of years, but was foiled by artificial lighting. Most insects that fly at night evolved to tilt their backs to wherever is brightest. For millions of years, this was the sky rather than the ground. With artificial lighting, moths found themselves now tilting their backs to streetlamps. This sends them into endless loops around the lamps, trapped by their evolutionary instincts. This study suggests that artificial lighting may not draw flying insects out of the darkness but simply trap those that fly past, like a net. Researchers have long warned that light pollution is a big driving force in the dramatic decline in insect populations. 📉 Using the 2008 financial crisis as a benchmark, Pepper Culpepper at University of Oxford aims to quantify public anger, understand media impact, and gauge its effects on EU policy making. Surveys in six countries in 2020 revealed a majority view in favor of more granular financial regulation. Also, experimental evidence showed that media stories about bank scandals significantly increased public demands for the strengthening of EU laws and regulations.
