Scrolling through Wikipedia to fact-check what you just read online? We've all been there 🤓 🌍 With over 60 million pages in the English edition alone and more than 300 other language versions, #Wikipedia contributes to shaping our understanding of the world. But how are Wikipedia’s volunteer editors tackling false or misleading information? And what role does the EU’s legal framework play in supporting this grassroots effort? 📢 In our new #DEM-Debate project supported by the European Media & Information Fund (EMIF), we're partnering with the University of Amsterdam and Eurecat - Technology Centre to dive into Wikipedia’s fact-checking and moderation practices during the 2024 European Parliament elections and to reflect on the current and upcoming EU legislation addressing #disinformation. This is not only about Wikipedia—it's about fostering a pluralistic, democratic information ecosystem in the digital age. 💡Can Wikipedia's community-driven model offer a blueprint for creating a more transparent and reliable online information ecosystem in the EU? Check out the report from the project launch at the European Parliament on September 30 and get ready to join the conversation! ⤵️ https://lnkd.in/ez-T3b2C Ronan Ó Fathaigh David Laniado Costanza Sciubba Caniglia Anna Mazgal Dimitar Parvanov Dimitrov

CDT Europe is proud to officially launch a new civil society alliance to combat spyware abuse across the EU & beyond 🇪🇺 🌐 We’ve brought together 15 leading civil society and journalist organisations to form a Spyware Coordination Group, united in the fight against the growing misuse of spyware technologies. This coalition aims to protect democracy, transparency, and accountability by advocating for stronger regulations and safeguards within the European Union. As the new European Commission prepares to take office, it’s crucial that addressing spyware abuse becomes a top priority. So far, EU institutions have failed to enact meaningful reforms in this area. That’s why we’re stepping in to push for urgent policy changes to ensure these technologies are subject to strict safeguards and accountability measures. The coalition is confident that with strong, collective action, the European Union can become a global leader in safeguarding citizens from the dangers posed by surveillance tools. The summer is over and we're enjoying the rentrée to the Brussels office after Wikimania, our annual global gathering hosted this August in Katowice. Our Dimitar Parvanov Dimitrov and Michele Failla had a talk about ways to use legislation to protect against #SLAPPs, or strategic lawsuits against public participation. This problem concerns not only journalists, but also #Wikipedia volunteers or staff and board members at Wikimedia organisations. But there are measures we can take! Check Dimi and Michele's walk-through for details 💡 🔍 📌 https://lnkd.in/emUXe8Nk

Spyware poses a significant threat to EU democratic values, public debate and healthy civic spaces by undermining critical pillars such as independent decision-making among lawmakers and the ability of journalists and activists to hold power accountable. It can severely infringe the fundamental rights to privacy and data protection and freedom of expression.
🚨 United Against Spyware Abuse in the EU and Beyond 🚨 Spyware isn’t just a privacy issue — it’s a threat to the very foundations of our democratic values. By undermining independent decision-making, restricting public debate, and silencing journalists and activists, spyware erodes the pillars of a healthy civic space. As new European Union institutions prepare to take office following the EU elections, the growing threat of spyware has become a pressing global concern that demands immediate attention. Today, CDT Europe, alongside 30 civil society and journalists' organisations, publishes a joint statement urging the incoming EU institutions to prioritise action against the misuse of spyware in the new legislative term. Some of our coalition’s key recommendations include: 🔹 A ban on the production, sale, and use of spyware that disproportionately harms fundamental rights. 🔹 Stronger export controls to prevent the misuse of these technologies beyond the EU. 🔹 Transparency and accountability in government contracts involving spyware. As Silvia Lorenzo Perez, Director of CDT Europe’s Security, Surveillance & Human Rights Programme, puts it: "The incoming EU institutions have the opportunity to correct the failures of the last legislature by taking concrete and decisive action against the abuse of spyware surveillance." The new EU institutions must seize this moment to restore public trust, protect our fundamental rights, and uphold the values that define the Union. #StopSpyware #Surveillance #Pegasus #CivilSociety

Herausgekommen ist die Analyse „Visions of AI in Popular Culture: Analysis of the Narratives about Artificial Intelligence in Science Fiction Films and Series“ https://lnkd.in/e-tFR5_C --------- How can civil society organisations create more awareness and understanding for their issues? The translation of digital and technological issues in particular is often a challenge. So how about taking a look at familiar and connectable narratives? Issues relating to technology, artificial intelligence and their social impact are increasingly becoming the subject of films and series. What inspiration can we as civil society organisations draw from this for our communication? Together with students and researchers from the Institute for Humanities at Uniwersytet SWPS, Wikimedia Europe took a deep dive into popular films and series and analysed which stories of and about people and technology are told in them.
