Hear from activists and academics from Serbia🇷🇸 and Bosnia & Herzegovina🇧🇦! People in Serbia have protested massively against a controversial lithium mine in the Jadar Valley, which rings alarm bells on environmental and social issues. What's more, the influence of corporation Rio Tinto is undermining the rule of law and government institutions fail to protect civil society actors. With the EU's failure to react to human rights violations on the ground, politicians are jeopardising the credibility of the so-called green transition. Together with European Environmental Bureau and Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Union, Brussels, we will host an event in the European Parliament this Wednesday, Oct 16th, to give a platform to activists and academics from Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Register now, come by and stand up for democracy and resource justice in the Balkans!👇 https://lnkd.in/e8bSUcsz?

In an absurd move, ExxonMobil sues the Dutch government over closed oil fields using the climate wrecking Energy Charter Treaty. Paul de Clerck tells Euronews that the claim for “massive compensation … shows how ruthless the company is”. “It also illustrates clearly again that the Energy Charter Treaty is being used by fossil fuel companies to undermine the energy transition and phase out of fossil fuels”

🚨 Are lithium mines in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina worth the cost? 🚨 ⛏️ The proposed mines pose severe environmental, social, and economic risks, compounded by weak institutions and prioritisation of private interests. Despite strong local opposition, governments continue to push forward, ignoring the mounting environmental costs and human rights concerns. 🌎 🔥 The EU's pursuit of lithium for its green transition is raising critical questions in the Balkans. While lithium is essential, supporting environmentally damaging and locally contested mining projects risks undermining the EU's own goals for responsible sourcing. The future of the region should prioritise environmental integrity and community rights over short-term profits. 🤝 Join us for an important discussion on the impacts of lithium extraction in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina and hear from NGOs, academics, and activists facing threats for defending their communities and the environment. We'll explore how the European Parliament can better support civil society in protecting human rights and promoting social justice in the region. What makes us 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒗𝒆 in the fight against the climate crisis? Sustainable resource management and sufficiency. Soon, candidates for the European Commission will face MEPs in what might be the EU bubble's toughest job interviews. We looked at the candidates and their mission letters and spotted an alarming gap: There is no mention of (absolute) resource use reduction nor #sufficiency. The new European Commission is set to cook a bland brew of competitiveness and economic growth, an old-fashioned recipe which does not necessarily guarantee wellbeing for all. In a new briefing we explain why resource use reduction is crucial and what actions MEPs can take. Not only should MEPs address these topics during the hearings of Commissioner-designates, the new European Parliament must use its historic opportunity to adopt a legislative initiative report on a Resource-wise Europe! 👁️👁️https://lnkd.in/e9FFtY-N

❗ Between 2019 and 2024, EU Commissioners and their cabinets have had nearly 900 total meetings with fossil fuel lobbyists 😨 The fossil influence in politics has got to go. For today's edition of The Green Fix I talked to Nathan Stewart, Coordinator of the Fossil Free Politics coalition campaign, on their work to call out the huge influence of fossil lobbyists - and in general to be really really annoying to polluting industries. 👀 🔥 We also chat about the power of more climate meetups like the Climate Drinks and the new Fossil Free Afterwork in Brussels 🍻 Check out the edition for the Q&A, plus climate news, opportunities, and why it's pretty normal to be having an existential crisis around about now 👇 https://lnkd.in/edBkWrJJ #FossilFreePolitics #KickBigPollutersOut #ClimateDrinks #FossilFree #ClimateJustice #EUPolitics #BrusselsBubble #CorporateCapture #SocialJustice #ClimateAction #ClimateSolutions

💡 Here we have the final #video pill 📽️ in the series focusing on the webinar organised by the GreenPaths Project consortium, discussing the impact of the 2024 EU elections on the prospects for a #Just #Transition in #Europe. "#Inequality is central for our #fight for #future and central for creating alliances. Taxing the rich is coming more and more into the broad agenda. Who will change their behavior if the rich continue to do the same?” Crucial points by Philippe Pochet from the first GreenPaths Project webinar. 💫 TWO new investigations take a deep dive into the Fossil Fuel Industry's many tactics of rolling into places where climate policies are negotiated. There's no better time to take a look at what the soon-to-be-past EU Commission and Fossil Fuel industry have been up to in between 2019 and 2024. Just some of the low lights: 🕴 hundreds of meetings between fossil fuel influencers and decision makers 💸 millions spent on lobbying for things like hydrogen 🔨 the industry uses many tools including regular meetings with the EU-Commission, revolving doors and forming "industry expert" groups. The two reports paint a frightening picture of how EU climate policy gets stuck in the fossil fuel industry’s chokehold. EU policymakers must—if not for the sake of the planet, then for the citizens to whom they are accountable—demonstrate that they take their democratic mandates seriously and act upon the needs and interests of the citizens that elected them, not Big Oil’s unaccountable lobby. “It is because of the wealth we have,” she said. “Because of the gas.” Read Alex Perry's harrowing account of the numerous atrocities committed in Mozambique in order to extract a product that is toxic to begin with: gas. This article in POLITICO Europe sets out the chilling history of the humanitarian disasters that unfolder ever since TotalEnergies' started its exploration for gas in the African country and asks some tough questions about the fossil fuel giant's accountability, knowledge and connections. Share this news to raise awareness of what is happening in Mozambique and amplify the "No to Gas! in Mozambique" campaign's call for truth, justice, and reparation for the survivors and the victims' families. They are also calling for an immediate investigation into the events and TotalEnergies’ potential role, due to its cooperation with security forces that are accused of severe crimes, including rape, murder, and torture. ⬇ https://lnkd.in/gdTQ7CJG
