“If you've heard of DeepSeek … they very cleverly trained a large language model and they showed that you can make it dramatically cheaper. And I think there are more opportunities to do stuff like that. We're hopefully in a good position to do something like that.” Canada CIFAR AI Chair Mark Schmidt, has received the prestigious Dorothy Killam Fellowship for his work on improving how AI models learn, and the enormous impacts it could have on real-world applications. Richard Sutton and Andrew G. Barto laid the foundation of reinforcement learning (RL), a technique crucial in applications such as autonomous driving and ChatGPT, more than forty years ago. Last week, they were recognized for their contributions to advancing RL with the 2024 ACM, Association for Computing Machinery A.M. Turing Award, often considered the ‘Nobel Prize for Computing.’ Sutton, a Professor at the University of Alberta, is a long-time Associate Fellow in CIFAR’s Learning in Machines & Brains program, a Canada CIFAR AI Chair and Chief Scientific Advisor at Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii). Sutton is not the only CIFAR-affiliated researcher to receive the Turing Award. Yoshua Bengio, Geoffrey Hinton and Yann LeCun were recognized with the A.M. Turing Award for their contributions to the development of deep learning in 2019. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gV93MJqt .....
