Can honesty oaths help reduce dishonest behaviors like tax evasion? A new megastudy involving over 21,500 participants in the UK and US explored this question. Researchers tested 21 different honesty oaths and found that 10 significantly increased tax compliance, reducing evasion by 4.5 to 8.5 percentage points. The most effective oaths nearly cut tax evasion in half! Interestingly, experts and laypeople struggled to predict the best-performing interventions, though experts fared better. The study shows that while honesty oaths can curb dishonesty, their effectiveness depends on the specific content. These insights could guide the design of impactful interventions to reduce dishonest behaviors. #BehavioralScience #TaxCompliance #Research #Dishonesty #BehavioralInterventions
🚨 New Research Alert Thrilled to share our latest paper, now published in Nature Human Behaviour (Nature Portfolio)! 🔍 How can we reduce dishonest behavior in a tax evasion game? One popular solution: honesty oaths. But do they all work the same? 🤔 To find out, we conducted a #megastudy testing 21 different honesty oaths on 20,000+ participants. Results: Both experts and laypeople struggled to predict which oaths worked best. The most effective oath? It almost cut tax evasion in half by focusing on specific actions: "I hereby declare that I will provide honest information when reporting my final income from the sorting task." Full paper here👉 https://lnkd.in/dXGcTc2H The project was led brilliantly by Janis Zickfeld, alongside an amazing team of many collaborators. BEworks is thrilled to have contributed a chapter in ‘What Works, What Doesn’t (and When)’ showcasing our work to reduce fare evasion in Santiago, Chile. This project highlights the importance of testing different interventions to ensure that investments in solutions are aligned to what works and demonstrates the effectiveness of behavioral approaches in combatting fare evasion, a global and pernicious problem. More broadly, this volume, and the other books in the BI Org book series, are essential reading for anyone seeking to apply behavioral science to thorny challenges across a range of sectors, and BEworks is grateful to BEAR - Behavioural Economics in Action at Rotman for the opportunity to share our cases, approach, and philosophy within this series. Be sure to read them all! #behavioralscience #behavioraleconomics #mobility Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) Metrolinx TransLink Metropolitan Transportation Authority Road & Transport Authority - RTA Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) San Francisco County Transportation Authority Metropolitan Transit Commission (Inc) Chicago Transit Authority
In Chapter 10 of “What Works, What Doesn’t (and When)”, the authors explain how they effectively (and less effectively) reduced fare evasion in Santiago, Chile. At our recent event Bridging the Human-AI gap: the Indispensable Role of Behavioural Science, we spent the evening discussing the necessity for AI to be built with and for humans. It was a privilege to host two engaging panel discussions on this topic, led by Jennifer Weeks, Ph.D. and Nathaniel Barr. Our first panel featured Ron Norris (Director of Innovation at Georgia Pacific) and Rajib Saha (Co-founder and CEO of parabole.ai). It focused on the role of human behaviour in causal AI. We discussed the components of causal AI – knowledge, data and causality, how causal AI differs from traditional machine learning, and what types of challenges we can solve with causal AI. Our second panel featured Dr. Melaina T Vinski, MSc, PhD (Associate Client Partner of Behavioural Science and AI and Analytics at IBM) and Dr. Jason Plaks (Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto). We learned about two different perspectives – academic and industry - on the role of behavioural science in AI adoption. We discussed how AI is changing the way organizations are run, public attitude towards different types of AI, and how behavioural science can predict human adoption of AI. #AIAdoption #BehaviouralScience #AITransformation #Innovation #TechAdoption #CausalAI #AIPredictors
