Anxiety often gets a bad rap. Understandably, many clients see it as something to “solve” or eliminate—who wouldn’t want to avoid the discomfort of a pounding heart, shaky hands, or racing thoughts?
But here’s the thing: anxiety isn’t inherently bad—it’s normal, just like hunger. It serves as an internal signal, drawing attention to what’s important.
In moderate doses, anxiety can actually be helpful. You’ve likely felt it before. Maybe a little pre-exam anxiety gave you the energy and focus you needed to study—and enough concern to ensure you got a good night’s sleep before the big day.
However, when anxiety escalates beyond a manageable level, it turns from helpful to harmful. Perhaps you have a client who initially feels anxiety as butterflies in their stomach, but as it increases, their whole body shakes, and they feel nauseous—making it hard to function.
As a helper, guiding your clients to recognize their anxiety levels—whether low, moderate, or high—builds self-awareness. It also gives them the tools to self-regulate so they can harness the benefits of anxiety without being overwhelmed by it.
Use our resource to help your clients become aware of the physical sensations associated with different feelings. It can help reduce tension and shift them into a calmer state.
Anxiety can be managed. With the right perspective and tools, it could even be an ally in achieving goals.
