Our Chief Carbon Scientist / Head of Engineering Phil De Luna recently took the stage at Elevate Festival 2024. He and fellow panelists David Babson of XPRIZE FOUNDATION and Mike Kelland of Planetary discussed turning the tides with climate tech, including breakthroughs in sustainable energy, carbon capture, and eco-friendly practices that could redefine our approach to saving the planet.

Thank you, Colin Deacon, for your tireless support of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and our joint efforts to make Canada the #1 provider of carbon removal credits.
An entirely new industry sits on Canada’s doorstep. As we work to fight the devastating effects of climate change, and build a more prosperous and resilient economy, we should look to the inspiring promise of carbon dioxide removal technologies. I ask you to consider setting aside 14 minutes to find out why and how. Canada holds the potential of becoming home to the most effective and cost-efficient carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies in the world. Globally, every business and country that cannot reduce their emissions to zero will have to buy carbon removal credits in order to get to net zero. Let’s aim for Canada to become the world’s most trusted provider of those carbon removal credits. I outline the opportunity, the existing examples and the path forward in this speech. I reference two promising Nova Scotian companies, CarbonRun and Planetary Technologies, as well as the company dedicated to scale the most promising direct air capture (DAC) technologies, Deep Sky. And I speak to the decades of research underlying ocean alkalinity enhancement, thanks to many of the researchers at Dalhousie University’s Ocean Frontier Institute. There are so many whose work should have been captured in this speech, but were not mentioned in my comments (e.g., apologies to Carbon Removal Canada among many others). We have reason to find hope in humanity’s existential fight against the growing climate crisis. Have a listen. You may just find that you agree with me. Either way, let me know your thoughts. Regardless, we can’t just reduce our CO2 emissions, at some point we must remove past emissions.

Something I've been deeply involved in discussing lately is the comparison between Class VI CCS wells in the USA and the approach taken in Alberta. Our latest co-authored report with CCSKnowledgeCentre delves into the variations and parallels between the two. The report sheds light on the meticulous and efficient approval process for CCS injection in Alberta, emphasizing its exceptional detail and speed, which outpaces other regions in North America. https://lnkd.in/gNEMgzF3 #CCS #CarbonCapture #EnvironmentalRegulations #CCSKnowledgeCentre Breanne O'Reilly James Fann #alberta #CCUS #energytransition #geology #geophysics #reservoirengineering #albertaenergy #canada Charlie Renzoni Phil De Luna Mac Walton

Raleigh, NC's WRAL dove into Zillow's new climate risk tool, and consulted our Climate Data Scientist, Max Dugan-Knight, for his thoughts. "The frequency of extreme rainfall during hurricanes has surged by 300%, leading to more real estate transactions falling through as insurers withdraw from high-risk markets," said Dugan-Knight. "This creates a challenging environment for buyers, who may find it harder to secure financing or insurance for properties deemed too risky." Thanks to Liz McLaughlin for the opportunity to weigh in on a positive step in homeownership and climate change education.

With our eye on reversing global warming, we're continuing to build a world-class team to accomplish our gigaton mission. Please help us welcome our new Project Engineer, Dorian Joulié! With a PhD in CO2 electrolysis, Dorian works on the carbon capture team at Deep Sky. Previously, he founded Carboneo, led the Electrochemistry team at Fairbrics to transform CO2 into fabrics, and worked as an Electrochemist at DAC company Yama Carbon. Bienvenue, Dorian!

"This isn’t just about reducing emissions; it’s about creating an entirely new economic sector." Bang on Lucy Hargreaves. I was initially skeptical of what government procurement could do to catalyze more purchases from large corporates. Then, the US DOE program not only had Google and Meta jump on board, but I increasingly had global corporate buyers asking where Deep Sky was on the list or if Deep Sky projects were deploying DOE-selected DAC technologies. Deep Sky's projects are in Canada, so we weren't eligible for the US program (though we are close with and provide feedback to the DOE program). Yes, we are deploying DOE-selected DAC technologies in our projects. We work with all best-in-class DAC technologies. And yes, I am now convinced these government procurement programs can drive outsized impact on catalyzing broader corporate procurement. The new Canadian federal program will drive much-needed capital to Canada's emerging carbon removal sector. We have the natural resources to be the global leader in carbon removal, so let's keep being bold and "show the world what's possible".

Great opinion article today by Lucy Hargreaves in The Hill Times about the Canadian government's new monumental step to purchase $10M in carbon removal services to help slow global warming. Thanks for mentioning our work in your article, Lucy. Lucy sums it up effectively: "Government procurement is a powerful tool for driving innovation and accelerating adoption. By committing to purchase carbon removal services, [Canada is] signaling to the rest of the market that this technology is vital to achieving our climate goals. It’s an invitation for other firms and countries to follow suit." Government purchases is a huge step forward for the industry. Let's go! https://lnkd.in/eyZKfNiX

Our CEO Damien Steel recently took the stage at Ontario Chamber of Commerce's Smart Symposium with cohost Climate Positive Energy to discuss carbon dioxide removal. After outlining the climate crisis problem, Damien dove into one of the solutions at the core of Deep Sky's work: engineered carbon removal to help reverse global warming. The size of the market opportunity is in the trillions, and Deep Sky is well on its way to commercial scale. Thanks to our hosts for the opportunity!

A first mover: we commend the Canadian government for today’s commitment to purchase $10m in carbon removal services to achieve net zero. “Today, we are taking another step to demonstrate our government’s leadership in greening Government operations and fighting climate change. In addition to lowering our emissions, we are adopting carbon removal solutions to ensure we reach our goal to be net-zero emissions by 2050. By working together and innovating, we are building a greener, cleaner future for all generations.” - The Honourable Anita Anand, President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Transport With government commitments like this, we can begin to reverse climate change. https://lnkd.in/eFrzfdqB
