Focal Engineering Incorporated was established in 2015 and headquartered in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. We provide engineering consulting services to the building industry, with a focus on energy efficiency, sustainability and energy modelling for both new construction and existing buildings. At Focal Engineering our philosophy is to produce results that benefit our clients, our community and the environment. We collaborate with our clients and colleagues to achieve a project’s goals, with a focus on energy opportunities. By evaluating how design, construction, operation, maintenance and renewal decisions impact the energy performance of a building, we aim to guide the team towards a cost-effective, energy efficient facility. This year, 🎅 brought us a new way to take a #mindful break: a local puzzle and roller (to pack away quickly during meetings)! This was a big one for us, and a great opportunity to connect with our colleagues, talk about pointed issues, and help move the energy modelling industry in BC to the next step!
My consulting colleagues will know that our business moves so quickly that by the time you finish one deliverable, you've already started on the next! Last week the Victoria Focal Engineering team took a moment to toast a big deliverable that went out the door. Working on the proposed City of Vancouver Energy Modelling Guidelines v3 has been a massive, 2-year undertaking. We performed months of energy modelling and research, hosted 2 industry-wide events, responded to 2 public reviews and countless comments, and had dozens of conversations with our colleagues and friends in the energy modelling world. While we know that everyone won't love every single proposed change, we've done our best to take a balanced approach that will provide clarity, consistency and overall better buildings for BC in the coming years. Last week we sent the final proposed guidelines and sealed report, so it should be headed to Vancouver Council shortly. We are delighted to share that the Gabion Passive House in Victoria, BC, has received a Technical Award from SAB Magazine! Focal provided PHPP energy modelling services for this fun and interesting project. One of the challenges was preserving the beautiful Garry Oak tree that you can see front and centre (and doing the associated PHPP shading calculations.... if you know, you know!)
