  • Thanks to the generosity of Sandy’s Oilfield Hauling and Variety - the Children's Charity of Alberta , pediatric patients at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital now have access to ride-on adaptive toy cars through Variety’s GoBabyGo program.  For 5-year-old Henry, he was never able to drive his GoBabyGo until the Glenrose’s brain-computer interface (BCI) program. When Henry’s parents, Monika and Jeff, saw just how life-changing the program was for Henry, they wanted more kids like him to have access.  For kids like Henry, this means more opportunities for play, therapy, and growth!   🌟 To read more about Henry’s inspiring story, click here: https://lnkd.in/gkvycigu

Pediatric patients at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital now have access to a ride-on adaptive toy car thanks to a Go Baby Go car donation from Variety - the Children’s Charity of Alberta. Go Baby Go is a program that supports children living with limited mobility using ride-on adaptive toy cars with push-button switches, supportive seating and communication devices to provide opportunities for children to move independently in ways that they otherwise would not be able to do on their own. One application clinicians at the Glenrose are using with the adaptive Go Baby Go cars is brain computer interface (BCI). Henry, who lives with complex mobility and communication challenges, can use a special BCI headset that picks up brain signals to control his Go Baby Go car. When Henry’s parents Monika and Jeff saw just how transformative these vehicles were, Jeff’s company, Sandy’s Oilfield Hauling, and Variety - the Children’s Charity of Alberta, donated a car just like his to the Glenrose’s BCI Program and I CAN Centre. Though the Go Baby Go cars are a fun experience for kids, the program is geared towards supporting children who are not independently mobile to engage in play while experiencing therapeutic benefits, building muscle control and muscle memory and learning about their environment. The car will be used like an assessment vehicle. “We want other kids like Henry who have tried the GoBabyGo and haven’t been successful, or otherwise wouldn’t have access to one, to have the opportunity to try it with their therapists,” Corinne Tuck, occupational therapist and clinical practice lead at the Glenrose. By having a car in the hospital, clinicians will be able to make modifications to suit each child’s needs with the hope of being able to recommend more families to the program.

  • March is Child Life Month, a time to celebrate child life specialists and the role they play in helping families and children navigate and normalize the hospital experience.  Natasha Beirnes, a certified child life specialist at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, describes the impact of her work. "Being a child life specialist is incredibly special because families allow you into some of their most vulnerable and difficult moments,” says Natasha. “Whether a child is undergoing a medical procedure, recovering from surgery or a brain injury, or adjusting to a new diagnosis, these times are often filled with fear and uncertainty. As a child life specialist, you offer comfort, guidance, and support to both the child and their family, helping the child feel safe and supported during a challenging experience."  Sam, a patient at the Glenrose, shares the impact of child life services on his hospital experience. “Child life helped me a lot. It made me feel happy in the hospital and helped me not miss my family as much."  A huge thank you to our donors whose contributions make it possible for us to support the programs, services, and tools that child life specialists use to enhance the health and recovery of our pediatric patients. 🌟 To learn more about Natasha’s wonderful work, check out https://lnkd.in/gWqyfCxQ, and to discover more about the child life program at Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital and contribute to its continued impact, visit https://lnkd.in/g2ndafQd.
