Children who ride in diesel school buses are exposed to polluted air, which can raise the risk of developing cancer and asthma and can lead to learning difficulties and memory disorders. Even over a short period, this exposure can severely affect brain function.🧠 In Canada, vehicles are the primary cause of air pollution, which causes 15,300 deaths a year. 🚗 💨 Read more in our report, Pathways for Canadian #ElectricSchoolBus Adoption https://buff.ly/3NMYnnT Alt text: Decorative image with two circles and a heading: "Debunking Electric School Bus Myths." The first circle says: "Myth #1," and the second one says, "We've always had diesel school buses, and they haven't harmed the thousands of children who ride them." The circles overlap with a school bus graphic next to them. The logos for CESBA, Green Communities Canada, and @Equiterre are at the bottom of the image.

Community-based environmental change
About us
Founded in 1995, Green Communities Canada is a national non-profit association of 20 community-based environmental organizations working together for a vibrant, equitable and sustainable future. Our mission is to connect community-based climate action groups through a national network to share resources, inspire innovative programming, and elevate our collective impact. We know that working together is the only way to move the needle forward. GCC’s current program areas of focus are home energy efficiency, stormwater management and active transportation. Member organization work cuts across additional program areas including waste, food insecurity, climate education, and youth engagement. We also work to influence government policy, at all levels, as it relates to environmental and climate issues.

Today is #WorldFoodDay! To celebrate, we would like to highlight two great organizations that we were proud to support this year through our #LivingCitiesCanada Fund. Both are instrumental in their communities, supporting access to healthy, affordable, and locally grown food. 🥬🍠 🍂 Hope Blooms, in Halifax NS, is a social enterprise and non profit offering educational programming for youth in gardening and culinary arts and a weekly farmers’ market, which offers a diversity of locally grown foods. Just last month, GCC and Hope Blooms teamed up to support a community tree planting event in honour of National Tree Day! 🌳 🍂 The BE Initiative (Black Environmental Initiative) is a nonprofit which focuses on educating the black community on issues of environmentalism and food justice. This year BEI ran weekly workshops from June to September for black youth, supporting them to connect with urban agriculture. These workshops covered everything from planting, to composting, food preservation, and more! 🌿 Growing food in urban spaces has so many positive impacts, empowering people to take part in their local food system, sparking meaningful connections to nature, and providing vital access to nutritious foods for all. 🫑🌽
