About us
The Ontario Urban Forest Council (OUFC) is a not-for-profit volunteer organization dedicated to the health of the urban forests in the province of Ontario. Our membership is varied & includes arborists, foresters, landscape architects, nurserymen, planners, municipalities, restoration specialists, environmentalists, conservation authorities, green advocates and many other individuals from the public interested and concerned about trees. The OUFC was formerly the Ontario Shade Tree Council (OSTC). In 2001, the name was changed to better reflect our ecological approach to urban forests and arboriculture. The OSTC evolved as a Council in 1964 from the Metro Toronto and Region Dutch Elm Disease Control Committee which was established in 1961 to investigate the control of Dutch Elm Disease. What We Do 1. Act as a hub of information about trees – their benefits and conservation Public outreach and engagement 2. Offer periodic educational workshops on various topics relating to tree conservation in cities 3. Host an Annual Conference and Annual General Meeting each November 4. Advocate for urban forest conservation at the provincial and municipal level 5. Develop cross-sectoral partnerships to advance the principles of urban forest planning, stewardship, and conservation

SFI is pleased to announce a $4.7M investment from Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund to lead a new wave of climate smart forestry practices across Canada. With this support, we aim to identify, develop, and implement climate smart practices and strategies to make our forests more resilient. “I am excited to have this opportunity to advance climate smart forestry at scale and grateful for the support from the Canadian government,” said Lauren T. Cooper, SFI Chief Conservation Officer. “Advancing SFI’s mission on forest-focused collaboration, this project is made possible through the engagement of SFI-certified and Indigenous-led organizations and is positioned to track measurable climate benefits.” This initiative, spanning three years, will bring together forest managers, Indigenous communities, and climate experts to create real change across millions of hectares.
