The Bahá’í Temple of South America recently marked its eighth anniversary with a celebration attended by over 600 people, reflecting on its impact as a center for spiritual and social transformation. • 5 Questions with Sebastián López Cardozo, Architectural Designer. Who/What inspired you to pursue the career you have today? I grew up in Uruguay, in what would now be called a co-housing arrangement: My parents and their friends, both couples with young children, realized that they could not afford a place in the city and that building something together would be cheaper. Hiring an architect back then was not something luxurious; in fact, it was one of the only ways to go about building a house—there was no Levittown-style development. Being brought up in that environment, co-parented by my family’s friends and raised alongside their children, made me aware of the power of architecture to foster community and care. My upbringing is responsible for my optimism about architecture’s potential. What is your role at HPA? I am an architectural designer working across Schematic Design, Design Development, and Construction Document phases, along with feasibility studies. I’m especially looking forward to expanding my on-site construction experience as I continue to learn from my peers and mentors. When did you start at HPA? I joined HPA in June 2022. What accomplishment are you most proud of at HPA? When I arrived, I had many architecture-adjacent interests (writing, planning, urban design) that I’d been pursuing independently of one another. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve been able to build on opportunities (guided by HPA’s leadership) to synthesize and expand these interests in numerous professional projects, among these the Toronto Metropolitan University’s Student Wellbeing Centre and the Barrie Performing Arts Centre. In the latter I worked across scales and media to help the project team bring a cohesive vision forward: From one week to another I moved between designing and working in the model shop to public engagement and report writing. What’s a fun fact about you many people may not know?   To satisfy my need for books and sociability at the office, I started a book club (17 people and growing!).   Outside of his work with HPA, Sebastian is an accomplished writer and editor, with articles featured in Azure magazine and as a co-author of Nueva Vivienda: New Housing Paradigms in Mexico. • Our approach to city building goes beyond the site. Working in dense urban centres we weave our architecture into the existing fabric, incorporating heritage elements and the character of the neighourhood while bringing strategic growth and diversification to the urban fabric. Massey Tower makes inventive use of its small, constrained site on the busy Yonge Street corridor. An airy glass retail pavilion animates the street while the retention and restoration of The Canadian Bank of Commerce heritage building retains the original character of the neighbourhood. #hariripontariniarchitects #citybuilding #urbandesign

  • Last week at the Facades+ conference hosted by The Architect’s Newspaper, Associate Partners Doron Meinhard and Michael Conway showcased the innovative designs behind The Tom Patterson Theatre and Building E at The Well. They explored how thoughtful building skin design not only defines the character of the public realm but also champions environmental responsibility. With a focus on depth, materiality, and light, and a combination of technical and practical knowledge, our high-performance facades create a unique identity and visitor experience—both inside and out. #hpa #architecturaldesign #architecturaldetail

Earlier this month Elder Cat Criger, Indigenous Philosopher, Traditional Teacher, and Knowledge Keeper, led a ceremony and fireside chat for our staff to commemorate the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. This ceremony offered a meaningful connection to Indigenous cultural roots and spiritual practices. The open discussion fostered understanding, reflection, and unity while honoring the resilience and contributions of Indigenous communities. We stand in support of Truth and Reconciliation and honour the lost children and survivors of residential schools, their families, and communities. We reflect on the painful history and ongoing impacts of these institutions, and commit to the ongoing process of reconciliation.
