The Newmarket Post Office was first opened over 100 years ago, along with other local shops and business that turned Main Street into bustling for hub of merchants, artisans and residents. The post office’s heritage comes from the memories created as part of the town’s public realm - a place remembered for connecting the community at social gatherings and through exchanges of daily life since 1914. Fast forward to the 21st century and we’ve continued its legacy. Partnering with @Streetcar_Developments, KIRKOR transformed the historic Newmarket Post Office and its Clock Tower into a boutique hotel while preserving its character and commitment to connecting the community. KIRKOR’s team carefully retained the three-storey red-brick structure, and behind it, designed a matching addition to enhance the heritage site into a contemporary place to stay the night, host events, and enjoy drinks and farm-fresh dishes. We join in sending our congratulations as the @thepostmarkhotel celebrated its official grand opening this month. It was a pleasure to honor the town’s history and Design Living for a new generation, creating a lively space that invites both locals and visitors to connect and indulge. Photography By: Joshua Best

Though there are many ways to mark a project's success, its ability to contribute positively to societal change especially stands out today. National Day for Truth & Reconciliation represents Canada's ongoing journey in rebuilding a renewed relationship with First Nations, Inuit and Metis. As Architects, we are reminded of the opportunities that urban design and public placemaking can provide for reconciliation, in respect and honour of Indigenous culture and traditions. KIRKOR had the pleasure of working with Jay Soule from Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, and Toronto-based artist Ed Pien to set the stage for "The Circle of Life". Seven river boulders surround two metal-cut panels to decorate the front of the Thornhill as a profound expression of Indigenous identity and resilience. Debwewin (truth), gwekwaadiziwin (honesty), nibwaakaawin (wisdom), zaagidwin (love), aakode'ewin (bravery), mnaadendmowin (respect), and dbegendizwin (humility) are each carved on a boulder in Anishinaabe and English, while the stainless steel panels are artfully crafted into a free-flowing river replete with salmon. It brings together materialities of (hi)stories, stone and metal to recall movement associated with waters, fish, hunting, fishing, gathering and ceremonies central to Indigenous peoples and sacred land. Together, the installation lines the public walkway with imagery of ancestral guidance to carry positivity as we walk through the world. Curious about the Carbon Coalition and want to learn more? Head over to carboncoalition.ca to connect with us! With a refreshed logo and its own website, we will be sharing the Carbon Coalition's progress, from its latest news and events, to the growing team of partners and sponsors. Leave us with your email address and we will keep you in-the-know of each of the initiative's "small steps, big changes" toward reducing embodied carbon in buildings. Keeping up with our blogs? Now published, check out "Bridging the 'Carbon Disconnect,'" where the challenges of low carbon alternatives are brought forward for a clearer understanding of their production, restrictions and testing processes, and how we can advocate for change: https://lnkd.in/gEb_2mR6
-
Where are the majority of low carbon alternatives produced and how does this impact our choices of building products? Of the low carbon products recommended for our study, 65% of the materials are produced outside of Canada. In addition to emission-generating activities like processing raw materials and manufacturing, we also need to consider the carbon intensity of a country where the low carbon material is being produced. If our goal is to reduce carbon emissions, transportation of the product to Canada is another important factor to account for. Referring to resources like Electricity Maps, we can visualize each country's climate impact ranked by carbon intensity of electricity consumed (gCO₂eq/kWh). In our upcoming blog post, we share our interpretation of this data and what it means for choosing low carbon products.
-
As architects, how can we achieve legislated carbon caps and provide our clients with low carbon product substitutions when there are issues restricting their use? Our mission is to bridge the 'Carbon Disconnect' with metrics - to fill in the information gaps with the appropriate technical data that verifies the carbon values of low carbon alternatives. In order to make better, more informed and sustainable choices, we are investigating the restrictions that our industry is facing regarding low carbon product availability, data, testing and applicability in Canada. In our next blog, we bring these restrictions to light to better understand the challenges that necessitates the cross-disciplinary collaboration of the Carbon Coalition. Stay tuned!

One Park Central comprises a 33-story residential tower that connects to an 8-storey podium, offering a sophisticated mixed-use development in Calgary’s Beltline community. The east side facilitates retail programs at-grade with 6 residential floors, while the west building contains the main entrance, lobby, retail space, and building services at the west laneway. Its massing and material arrangement combines glazing, aluminum, and wood-veneered cladding systems to create a sculptured presence at 12 Avenue and 4 Street South West. This collaborative design between KIRKOR & @scbdesign_ in Chicago highlights the importance of permeability within an urban setting. The project’s rear promenade sits between two buildings, creating a space that feels like a warm welcome within the urban setting, and its illuminated breezeway not only features local sculptures, but provides access to the rear walkway from 12th Avenue as well. Highly considerate of accessibility, One Park Central highlights the urban planning and design techniques we exercise to create interconnected streets and pathways that ease walkability, traffic flow, and overall urban livability. Special thanks to Saeed Abdollahi for some of these photographs! #KIRKOR #WeDesignLiving #Calgary #Alberta

An impactful KIRKOR and Fusion Homes collaboration has enlivened downtown Guelph with its largest residential development: The Metalworks Master Plan. Spanning over eight acres, the master plan holds nearly 200 years of history. Involving revitalization and redevelopment of a heritage site along the Speed River, we connected with the City of Guelph and the local community to discuss how to preserve and celebrate these historical aspects, and repurpose existing buildings that used to house small and large-scale manufacturing facilities. Smart-growth strategies, urban planning techniques, and fresh design perspectives informed the execution of a multi-phase master plan comprising five mixed-use buildings that integrate residential, commercial and recreational spaces with contemporary amenities for residents and visitors. The project includes a mix of over 600 residential units, such as condominiums, townhouses, and apartments, offering a housing options for a diverse range of demographics. The City of Guelph recently published a progress report on their 2019-2023 'Future Ready Strategic Plan', sharing that 77% of their initiatives were successfully completed or advanced. In alignment with their vision, to create an "inclusive, connected, prosperous city", the Metalworks master plan is a exemplary example of how architects and municipalities work together to create communities that prioritize biophilia with green spaces, parks, and waterfront access, and encourage walkability and cycling to "tie the community together".
