We connect skilled newcomers of African descent with meaningful career opportunities in Canada

About us

300,000 newcomers arrive in Canada each year; unemployment and underemployment are among the largest challenges faced by those transitioning to Canada. According to Statistics Canada, African-born immigrants have the lowest employment rate and the highest unemployment rate of all immigrant groups. These rate differentials are most drastic when comparing them to Canadian-born citizens. The lack of recognition of previous work experience and education by employers limits newcomers' ability to secure adequate jobs. Most newcomers move here for the promise of a better life but face immense challenges securing jobs matching their skill level, leaving them feeling undervalued. At makingtheMove, our mission is to help skilled newcomers of African descent secure jobs that value their unique combination of education, skills, and work experience so that they have meaningful work.  We support newcomers by building an awareness of the job marketplace, allowing them to create meaningful connections with industry leaders and providing resources that accelerate their career transition to Canada.

If you are job hunting and your cold emails never gets any response, here are a few ways to get recruiters attention: 🚀Research the Company: Understand the company’s culture, values, and recent news in order to tailor your email accordingly. 🚀Offer Value: Explain how your skills and experience can benefit the company, rather than simply asking for a job. 🚀Be Patient: The job search process can take time. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t receive immediate responses. 🚀 Follow Up Politely: If you don’t hear back after a reasonable amount of time, send a polite follow-up email. 🚀Expand Your Network: Building relationships with people in your industry can increase your visibility and open doors to new opportunities. By implementing these tips, you can increase your chances of getting a positive response to your cold emails. Good luck on your next cold email.👍

Networking 101 according to our founder: Always do your homework and stop being generic! Generic networking is like sending a mass email. People rarely engage with emails that do not feel authentic and tailored. Personalized networking on the other hand always gets the job done. Trust me, people can always tell the difference. Follow us for more tips on how to network and make better connections.
