🌟 The Origin Story of Susan Lomas, P.Geo. 🌟 A movement was born in the heart of the mining world, led by a brave woman who saw beyond the earth's crust to its core values. Meet Susan Lomas, P.Geo., the geologist turned pioneer who founded Mine Shift, an organization of hope and transformation in the mining sector. From the bustling mining hub of Timmins, Ontario, to the global stage, Susan's journey was fueled by a passion for geology and a relentless drive for learning. Her love for the earth and the adventures it offered were matched only by her determination to confront and change the darker aspects of mining. It all started with a tweet in 2018. #MeTooMining, a movement ignited by Susan's courage to speak up, evolved into Mine Shift with the mission to create safe, inclusive, and respectful workplaces. Through innovative programs like #DIGGER training, Mine Shift is teaching leaders and talent worldwide that harassment knows no gender—it affects us all. Our values—Accountability, Allyship, Courageous Leadership, Empathy, and Empowerment—are the bedrock of our mission. Under Susan's leadership, we're not just working towards a safer mining sector but building it, one courageous step at a time. This article highlights the importance and benefits of promoting #PsychologicalSafety in the workplace. Unfortunately, many environments still lack a strong #SpeakUp culture, often pressuring individuals to ignore wrongdoing. Until open dialogue and accountability become the standard, active bystanders who courageously address harmful behavior face higher risks. Moving from being a passive bystander (bystander effect) to an active one requires awareness and skill development. Reach out today to schedule our DIGGER workshop for your staff or register as an individual and join us on October 23 (link in comments). #Bullying #harassment #workshop #training #bystander #workplace #WorkplaceCulture #accountability #safety #MentalHealth #HealthSafety

New article time. Recent staff development activities have prompted me to think of the importance of psychological safety in the workplace to support elite performance. Here are some musings on how to achieve it within business.

Bystander intervention training works! In addition to numerous research papers, our post DIGGER workshop surveys indicate they are an overwhelming impactful & effective. 90% of DIGGER workshop attendees indicate that they felt more empowered to recognize & address maltreatment in the future. For the remaining participants (10%), they already had experience in standing up against harassment. This stat aligns with the pre-workshop survey data of 9% who have already acted as an active bystander. Over the past 5 years, we have been delivering our DIGGER workshops to workers within the mining industry. In our pre-workshop survey, only 27% of participants indicated that they would know what to do when witnessing harassment in the workplace. Prior to taking the course, 76% of participants indicated that they never/rarely intervene when witnessing bullying or harassment. And only 9% of people said they have taken action against harassment in the past 3 years. For the 91% who haven't intervened, nearly half of participants cited that they "didn't know what to do, were afraid of getting involved, or the person had more power than me". Mine Shift is here to help empower more people to recognize bullying and harassment and provide actionable strategies to counteract the #BystanderEffect. Our industry-specific scenario training includes real life situations experienced within the mining industry and provides participants the opportunity to practice our DIGGER approach. Thanks to CIM Magazine for inclusion in their June/July issue discussing the importance of fostering a speak-up culture to promote inclusion and psychological safety in the workplace. Our bystander intervention program, DIGGER, is an impactful action that organizations and individuals can take to help interrupt, intervene, and prevent harassment in the workplace. "What we really want to do is change the culture so that we're not having these incidents happen in the first place." Susan Lomas, P.Geo, founder and president of Mine Shift, featured in photo below at Canadian Coalition of Women in Science, Engineering, Trades and Technology (CCWESTT) conference earlier this year. A thoughtful summary by 🌟Linda Crockett💫 Global Workplace Psychological Safety Expert on this recent court decision and the power of the bystander as well as a strong message to Canadian employers. Excerpt from CBC article: "After a hearing in April 2024, a decision by a human rights commission adjudicator said that as part of a settlement, Price Industries "has apologized for not thoroughly recognizing and addressing the sexist atmosphere in the workplace and not remediating the effects it had on female employees." The human rights commission had done its own investigation into the complaint, and its 2019 report found that on a balance of probabilities, Jaques "was subject to harassment based on sex," and that Price Industries "did not take reasonable steps to terminate the harassment." The investigation report concluded the company "systematically discriminates against female employees," but said it "did not discriminate against the complainant on the basis of age."

The complainant speaks about her colleagues who supported her. “They put their own jobs on the line for doing that. And I'm very grateful for them," she said. "I'm grateful for the support that my family has given me." This commendation extends to the #complainant (#target) and all witnesses (#bystanders) who demonstrated remarkable courage, integrity, and strength in undertaking such a challenging but essential task. Their actions, grounded in a commitment to #justice, ultimately succeeded. However, it is concerning that achieving justice took nine years. Each instance of such bravery contributes to a broader impact, paving the way for future cases. To #employers and #leaders, it is crucial to heed this example and ensure that your practices protect your #employees. Neglecting to do so may result in being publicly exposed on social media. Prioritizing #ethical behavior and safeguarding your #workforce is paramount. "The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace outlines a few guiding principles, including: > Responsibility is necessarily shared by management, employees, and union; > Mutually respectful relationships are foundational and need to be defined; and > Everyone has a responsibility to do no harm to the psychological safety of others. When managing psychological health and safety it is important to remember that the responsibility of establishing and maintaining a psychologically healthy and safe work environment is a collective effort where all individuals within the organization play a part."
