At Okane, we're passionate about working with young professionals to help create a better tomorrow! Recently, we had the pleasure of collaborating with AusIMM Southern Queensland Student Chapter and The University of Queensland UQ Mining and Metallurgy Association (MAMA) to host an insightful event at the University of Queensland in Brisbane! Our team members Emma Trusz, Matthew Taylor, and Stasia Peshkoff shared their experiences at Okane, highlighting their specialized fields and focus areas. It was a great opportunity to connect with students, discuss integrated mine closure and returning land use planning, and highlight the exciting career opportunities available at Okane. Navigating uncertainty and risk is essential for effective mine closure. Many mine sites worldwide face uncertainties that pose significant risks—from water quality to geotechnical instability—that can impact decision-making and outcomes throughout the entire mine lifecycle. In our latest article, we discuss the importance of an adaptive management framework for integrated mine closure, highlighting key considerations for developing an adaptive management plan and distinguishing it from a trigger action response plan. Curious about the fundamentals of landform design? Explore them in "Landform Design Principles", a three-episode series with Okane's senior technical advisor, Mike O'Kane, and founder of the Landform Design Institute (LDI), Gord McKenna, on LDI's Getting Closure podcast. In the final episode, Mike and Gord discuss critical topics such as tracking every drop of water through the landscape (Principle 9), progressive mine reclamation (Principle 10), planning for sustainable closure (Principle 11), and sharing lessons from both successes and failures (Principle 12). Listen to all episodes on the following platforms: Web: https://lnkd.in/gAiPCjQ4 Apple: https://lnkd.in/gPe4jhiv Spotify: https://lnkd.in/gvBvrC4x #mineclosure #LandformDesignInstitute #Okane
In the third episode of Season 3 of the Getting Closure podcast host Mike O’Kane explores the last three principles of landform design with Institute Founder Gord McKenna, concluding the three-episode discussion. The pair explain why it’s important to follow every drop of water through the landscape (Principle 9), reclaim a mine progressively (Principle 10), plan for sustainable closure (Principle 11), and share the lessons of both failure and success (Principle 12). In emphasizing the importance of providing the best possible landform design advice to practitioners, Mike conjures one of the most famous quotes by Oscar Wilde: “I always pass on good advice. It is the only thing to do with it. It is never of any use to oneself.” The implication of the phrase is that wisdom finds its true value when shared with others, a practice Mike observes is a key objective in speaking with the learned guests who come on the “Getting Closure” podcast. At Okane, we value and are committed to ongoing reflection and dedicated learning as we continue on our reconciliation journey. This year, our Canadian teams engaged in important initiatives last week, in addition to our Canadian offices observing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day on September 30. In Saskatoon, our team honoured Orange Shirt Day, reflecting on the impactful story of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, whose orange shirt was taken from her on her first day at residential school. This day serves as a reminder of the lasting impact of residential schools and the importance of listening to survivors’ stories. In Calgary, our team attended a virtual Lunch and Learn hosted by the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) on "A Community Perspective on the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples." The NCTR provides a valuable platform for learning and dialogue, honouring and preserving the truths and experiences of residential school survivors, their families, and communities. To learn more about the Orange Shirt Society and Orange Shirt Day, please visit orangeshirtday.org. To learn more about NCTR and watch their recorded webinars, please visit nctr.ca.
