About us

Professional Footballers’ Association Canada was formed in 2020 by Canadian Premier League players seeking accountability, fairness, and transparency. Since 2021, PFA Canada has been a candidate member of FIFPRO. In 2022, CPL players voted unanimously in favour of PFA Canada to act as their collective bargaining agent. Since then, we continue to represent CPL players in matters related to their employment whilst negotiating a first-ever collective bargaining agreement. PFA Canada wants above all a fair and transparent domestic football economy. With FIFPRO, we are also committed to creating enduring, positive change regarding gender equality throughout the game in Canada and abroad. PFA is run by the players, for the players. Members elect a Board of Directors made up of current and former professionals. This Board is supported by the Executive Director and legal counsel.

🙌 "Delivering world-class sports integrity education to Canadian Premier League athletes in a supportive and open environment is one of PFA Canada | AFP Canada's top priorities. Our two-year partnership with IBIA has been a game-changer for three reasons”, commented Marco Carducci, President of PFA Canada and Goalkeeper at Cavalry FC, on the IBIA and PFA CANADA joint sports integrity initiative 👇: 1️⃣ “IBIA’s face-to-face sports integrity training and customised 3R’s model, focused on 'Rules, Responsibility, and Reporting', fosters an environment of trust among athletes, and allows them to freely discuss delicate issues.  2️⃣ Many of our athletes are young and in their 20s and need to understand the consequences of their actions and, crucially, that there is a safe environment for them to report possible approaches. 3️⃣ Benefitting from this guidance and peer-to-peer discussions will help protect them from being manipulated by match-fixers.”   Following another education campaign milestone in Canada, with the successful training of Valour FC athletes, Marco added:    “Canadian football is on the rise, and PFA CANADA is proud to be a part of this journey, ensuring our players get top-notch support every step of the way. With more training planned next season and additional sessions already requested for 2024, the future looks bright. I would encourage other Canadian player associations and sports bodies to also leverage IBIA’s expertise and the generous backing from bet365, Betway Group, and FanDuel and join this initiative.”

  • Our partnership with International Betting Integrity Association in action! Thank you to their team and all the players following the training! Notre partenariat avec l'International Betting Integrity Association en action! Merci à leur équipe et à tous les joueurs suivant la formation!

The IBIA’s education campaign in Canada is in full swing with additional integrity training sessions delivered to players at Atlético Ottawa and Halifax Wanderers FC last week. It’s great to see the teams and athletes taking time to prioritize sports integrity during their competitive season, when it matters most. This is a joint fight that starts with education in the locker rooms.    Collaboration is essential to the initative’s success. So we’re incredibly grateful for the productive partnerships with PFA Canada | AFP Canada, the Canadian Premier League, and to our members, bet365, Betway Group, and FanDuel, for helping to bring IBIA’s sports integrity education initiative to Canada.    A big thanks also goes to Jean-François Reymond, IBIA's Education Ambassador, who helped tailoring the education material and delivered the train the trainers sessions to Dan Kruk and his team from PFA Canada.    With IBIA's training model, which is based on building trust and peer-to-peer learning, more and more athletes understand how they can avoid and prevent sports integrity breaches, including by using the FIFPRO ‘Red Button’ app for anonymously reporting sports integrity concerns.    The IBIA model is relevant to all sports, so we’re also excited by the interest we’ve received from other Canadian sports governing bodies about the prospect of extending the initiative to their athletes.   For those that want to know more, follow our inspiring education ambassador Jean-François Reymond’s who writes regularly about IBIA’s approach to sports integrity training: https://lnkd.in/dCrCrY2r   You can also find more about IBIA training model here: https://lnkd.in/e-WJCpKY

“It's the missing piece of the puzzle in the fight against racism.” Three individuals were jailed for eight months and banned from attending football matches for two years after being found guilty of abusing Vinicius Jr. Former USA defender Justin Morrow, a #FIFPRO EDI Committee member and Black Players For Change co-founder, explains why it's a historic milestone for players. • PFA Canada | AFP Canada knows firsthand the importance of sports integrity education & the power of face-to-face contact with players. Given the rapidly changing betting landscape in Canada, our 2024 Canadian Premier League (CPL) player outreach program includes a fulsome discussion regarding the role & responsibilities of players regarding sporting integrity. Supported by the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) & IBIA Athlete Ambassador Jean-François Reymond, we’ve not only been able to build upon the work of Canada Soccer & the CPL in the area of sports integrity, as a member of @FIFPRO, we’ve been able to re-emphasize to our members the use of the Red Button App — the best anonymous, athlete-centred tool for players to report an approach to fix a match or other breaches of sports integrity. Protecting the integrity of the game and by extension, the careers of CPL players, is a shared responsibility. We have no doubt the support of FIFPro & the IBIA enables us to fulfil our obligations to our members.

My plane back to Europe 🇪🇺 allowed me to take some time to think about the panel discussion I was part of last Thursday at the Canadian Gaming Summit. These are my 4️⃣ takeaways : 1️⃣ Regulators, sports, betting operators - everyone in the sports integrity ecosystem has a strong shared interest in preventing match fixing. Operators – who are the targets of fraudulent betting – play a vital role by monitoring and reporting suspicious betting patterns. 2️⃣ Match-fixing requires the involvement of actors (either athletes or officials) which is why sports integrity education is key 🔑. In our experience, face-to-face education 🗣️ programmes are the best way to build the necessary trust and engagement. 3️⃣ Match-fixers should be very worried. Sport operators are constantly upgrading their internal control systems, including the introduction AI. This means their ability to detect and report suspicious activity, and support investigations, is constantly increasing. 4️⃣ The problem with match-fixing is the unregulated markets, particularly in Asia. There is a clear recognition that balanced and efficient regulation is the best way to attract responsible betting operators and channel consumers into the regulated markets. Ontario is a great example; with recent regulation increasing the channelling rate to 92%. For more on this, take a look at this recent International Betting Integrity Association study: https://ibia.bet/study/ A big thank you to our moderator Doug Hood from the Alcohol & Gaming Commission of Ontario, and my fellow panelists, Scott Vanderwel, PointsBet 🇨🇦, Owen Welsh, Scott Grant from Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport / Centre canadien pour l’éthique dans le sport, John Wellendorf, IC360 Advisory North America and Sebastian J. for a great discussion. Special thanks to Nick O'Malley for sharing a great Euro football lunch with me.

🌟 Exciting News! We're thrilled to announce the launch of our partnership with PFA Canada | AFP Canada to implement an education campaign aimed at empowering players in the Canadian Premier League to combat match-fixing! 🏆⚽ At IBIA, we believe in the power of education and awareness to safeguard the integrity of sports: it's imperative that we equip athletes with the knowledge and tools to recognize, resist, and report any attempts at manipulation. Jean-François Reymond, IBIA’s Education Ambassador, who will work with the PFA Canada trainers on the May launch, said: “We look forward to working with PFA Canada to further protect the Canadian Premier League from the threat of sports-betting related match-fixing. Protecting the integrity of sport means protecting the integrity of athletes. Most often through a lack of awareness, it is the athletes who are risking their careers and livelihoods. IBIA’s objective is to help build a best-in-class program for all athletes that serves to protect the integrity of Canadian sport and the careers of Canada’s athletes.” Through in-person trainings and online resources we're committed to arming athletes with the skills they need to uphold the spirit of fair play and protect the integrity of the game. In 2024, the program will educate approximately 300 players about the potential threat of sports-betting related match-fixing to the integrity of the Canadian Premier League, their careers, as well as its potential to defraud sports betting operators and customers. The agreement also stipulates a repeat training in 2025 to ensure new players joining the league are also able to protect themselves from criminals and corrupters and report any suspicious activity. The IBIA - PFA Canada sports-integrity education program has been enabled by a CA$300,000 commitment over three years by IBIA and its member operators bet365, Betway Group and FanDuel for the Canadian market, from which other sports are also expected to benefit. Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, said: “IBIA’s members take their role – as responsible regulated betting operators – in protecting the integrity of sporting competition and of betting markets seriously. Alongside balanced, efficient and evidenced-based regulation, protecting soccer players, staff and officials from being targeted by criminals is an essential first step to stamping-out sports-betting related match-fixing and fraud.” Together, we can make a difference and ensure that sports remain a platform for excellence, integrity, and inspiration. Join us in our mission to #FightMatchFixing and create a level playing field for athletes worldwide! 💪🌍 Read the full PR here: https://lnkd.in/eEN_Qkmb #IntegrityInSports #AthleteEmpowerment #FairPlay #EducationCampaign

Merel van Dongen talks calendar solutions on The Guardian’s Women's Football Weekly podcast with Faye Carruthers and Suzanne Wrack. #FIFPRO's Sarah Gregorius and Dr Alex Culvin, PhD joined Merel on the podcast. Sarah explained: “On the one hand, the physical and mental demands on athletes playing at a high level domestically and internationally are reaching breaking point with very little time for rest between game.   “Then in stark contrast to that, the majority of players globally are actually playing too little football with stop-start schedules that have to fit in with the international calendar rather than suiting their domestic game.” Alex added: “It's a problem that affects a large proportion of players and I don't think it's considered enough from competition organisers perspective.” Tap the link in the comments below to hear the podcast episode in full.

Over the years IBIA has been working hand in hand with FIFA by exchanging information on suspicious activities to fight against match-fixing. This is a complex and global phenomenon which cannot be tackled alone. Collaboration is needed on all fronts. As Gianni Infantino stated today during the FIFA Integrity Summit: "We must ensure that the playing field remains level and the game free of malevolent outside influences, because if it doesn't, then the very existence of our beloved sport will be under threat. We have to remain on our guard." This week FIFA organised the very first Integrity Summit, engaging in profound discussions about tackling match manipulation. Our colleague Jack Byrne attended the event, representing the regulated sports betting industry commitment in the continuous fight against match-fixing. https://lnkd.in/eAgBQSKW
