While conducting an Environmental Site Assessment just outside of Nelson BC, PGLer Sarah Barr, B. Tech., PAg. came across an intact glass Edison Battery Oil bottle. This object is around 100 years old! Edison Battery oil bottles were used to prevent electrolytes in batteries from evaporating. They are sought after by collectors of vintage items and offer a fascinating piece of history that represents the innovation of one of the most prolific inventors of the 20th century, Thomas Edison. What is the potential of carbon capture and storage in the U.S. Midwest? This region hosts multiple geologic formations with an estimated capacity to store over 147 billion metric tons of CO2 – the equivalent of over 400 years of IL’s and IN’s combined statewide annual CO2 emissions. Midwestern states also host a number of the country’s largest hard-to-abate industrial facilities. Carbon capture and storage can provide an industrial decarbonization option where electrification or other zero-carbon alternatives are not presently viable. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gW6_Ybr9

Sailors know there to be vast and ongoing streams of energy within the ocean. Waves, current flow, tides lapping on the shore--could these be tapped to create electricity? In response to the 1970s oil crisis, modern scientific pursuit of wave energy was initiated by Stephen Salter. His 1974 Salter's Duck, in small scale controlled tests, showed that the duck's curved cam-like body could stop 90% of wave motion and convert 90% of it to electricity. Today, Salter is Emeritus Professor of Engineering Design at the University of Edinburgh. Funding for the project was halted in 1982 so efforts were not taken to full assessment. Could Salter's Duck be revived; its principles applied to meet today's clean energy needs? Learn about the duck, and assess its potential. Want to be a part of the blue tech start up? What famous inventor’s water power tech ideas rarely made it past ink on a page? The answer might inspire you to compete in the #PowerAtSea Prize. In the first phase of the prize competition, all you need is a theoretically sound #MarineEnergy concept. Ideas in early stages of development are welcome—from a system, subsystem, or component that has not yet been developed to those that have had some previous work completed, even up to concepts in the prototype stage. The right idea could win you a piece of the $1.7 million cash prize pool. Find the trivia answer and more prize info: https://lnkd.in/g5anT_7y

The sun is ramping up for a big year. In one sense it already had a big year, thanks to the April 8 solar eclipse. But that was a terrestrial phenomenon. What we’re gearing up for is a decidedly solar one—our star is nearing the peak of its magnetic activity cycle, which means more sunspots, more storms and, potentially, more danger to Earth. The sun’s magnetic field is generated in its interior, where conditions are so hot that electrons are stripped from their host atoms, forming an ionized gas. A basic law of physics states that moving electric charges generate a magnetic field, and it’s this ionized-gas-induced magnetism that so profoundly affects the sun’s behavior. #Threat #Solar #Superstorm #is #growing #and #we #are #not #ready #for #it

CEO Peter Godart joined Matthew Myers of Climate Tech Cocktails on #ClimateTechCoffee to talk about how Found Energy is decarbonizing heavy industry by replacing fossil fuels with carbon-free aluminum fuel. Thanks for having us! 🌎 “In the short term, we're taking aluminum waste that is difficult to recycle and we're actually turning it into [alumina trihydrate] - basically shortcutting having to mine bauxite. And it turns out if you do that for a very wide range of feedstocks and processes you're trying to decarbonize, it's actually a carbon-negative process. You're eliminating Scope One emissions through Scope Three. …But in the long term, what we want to do is take that aluminum oxide and go back up the thermodynamic ladder. And if you use electricity to do that - which is basically how all aluminum is made today - then we have what we're calling the world's first rechargeable fuel.” #aluminum #industrialdecarbonization #cleanenergy #sustainability

“Just Transitions threaten prosperity in coal regions!” This statement does not correspond to the truth, as major injustices and problems existed in the regions beforehand. Watch Lukas Hermwille's video for #CINTRAN to learn more. ⬇ This is also our last video from the #CINTRAN series. To learn more about the complex reality between fossil-fuel phase-outs and their socio-economic realities, check out the fantastic research our team members from Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie gGmbH, University of Sussex, Chalmers University of Technology and many more have worked on for the last years. ➡ https://lnkd.in/gDUsMidp
