The International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC Field Hospital in Rafah is always busy. For more than five months, the international Red Cross team of local and international staff have been striving to meet the increasing needs. Staff, patients, and their families move between tents to access medical services that used to be available at hospitals in Gaza. As many of those hospitals have been destroyed the field hospital is one of the limited healthcare infrastructure in operation. Everything from visits to the emergency department to surgeries happens in these tents. Each morning the team walks through the hospital, checking patients, and planning for the surgeries that will happen that day. The health situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Despite humanitarian law stating that health care workers and infrastructure are not a target, only a fraction of health facilities and a few field hospitals are still operational and able to offer services to the more than two million residents of Gaza. It means many patients with chronic diseases, recent injuries or new sicknesses cannot receive treatment. There is an increase in respiratory diseases, and poor health and sanitation conditions mean infections are spreading through displaced populations. Many of the critically wounded have not been able to access care. As a result, the ICRC Field Hospital is in high demand. With support from the Government of Canada Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canadaa and donors, the Canadian Red Cross has provided equipment, medicines and personnel to support the field hospital.

In September, the Canadian Red Cross joined leaders from 19 Northern Manitoba communities at the first-ever Health Emergency Management Symposium held in Thompson. Doug Mercer, Chair of the Health Emergency Management Symposium, shares, "In an event such as this, we get community input. We learn the realities, the things that are not captured in reports, that are not captured in financial statements. The real life situations that communities experience on an ongoing basis and the impacts of it.” By engaging with communities firsthand, we foster empathy and understanding. Together, we can address mental wellness challenges, help people cope, stay resilient, and improve their quality of life.

While there are so many difficult moments for the team working in the International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC Field Hospital in Rafah, Gaza, there are also moments of joy. The birth of a baby brings some of those moments. Meet two of the more than 168 babies born at the field hospital. Nous was born at the field hospital in early September. Her parents Eman and Daif had their whole family coming to celebrate. Sara’s birth was a little trickier -- Aisha gave birth early in the morning, the same moment the generator that was providing much-needed light stopped due to scheduled maintenance. With the support of midwife Minna Vanhamäki from the Finnish Red Cross, Aisha delivered a healthy baby girl. The ongoing conflict in Gaza leaves people in need of access to vital medical care. Since the escalation in hostilities, the Red Cross team including local and international staff have been working at the field hospital to address the increasing needs. With funding from the Government of Canada Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada and the public, the Canadian Red Cross continues to support the ICRC Field Hospital with equipment, medicines, and personnel. International humanitarian law (IHL) is a set of rules that seek to limit the effects of armed conflict. Also called the rules of war or the rules of armed conflict, IHL protects people who are not or are no longer participating in the hostilities and restricts the means and methods of warfare. IHL is not optional. All parties to a conflict have an obligation to follow the rules of war, everywhere and at all times.
