UNHCR Canada is dedicated to providing life-saving support to refugees, displaced and stateless people.
About us
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), also known as the UN Refugee Agency, is the world’s leading organization aiding and protecting people forced to flee their homes due to violence, conflict and persecution. UNHCR provides shelter, food, water, medical care and other life-saving assistance to refugees around the world. In 1976, UNHCR Representation opened its doors in Canada to fulfil these roles. Our offices in Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver strive to fulfill four main objectives in Canada: achieve the highest standards of protection for refugees and asylum seekers in Canada, work with the Canadian government to resettle refugees in Canada, inform and educate Canadians about the global displacement crisis, and to encourage the Canadian public and Government of Canada to donate to UNHCR programs worldwide.

“I believe in leading by example. If we want to see change in our communities, we have to invest in ourselves first. When you lead with that mindset, others will follow." Mandela Kuet’s childhood in Winnipeg’s North End was shaped by the sights and sounds of a community deeply intertwined with both Indigenous and newcomer cultures. It was a place where the sense of family, culture, and community provided a foundation for Mandela’s lifelong commitment to making a difference. Through his organization, The HoodFams, Mandela works with Winnipeg youth, addressing systemic inequalities, bridging cultures, and preventing gang involvement through education and sports. 🏀 🎒 ➡️ Read more about Mandela's story and his incredible work in the community: https://lnkd.in/ewb24FXK

"In one day alone, over 9,000 people crossed the border. This influx is the biggest that Burundi has seen in many years." Since February, over 40,000 Congolese nationals - the majority of whom are women and children - have arrived in Burundi, escaping violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency's Brigitte Mukanga, spoke with CBC/Radio-Canada's As It Happens, sharing insights on what UNHCR teams have witnessed on the ground as needs continue to grow.
