“It's not just about delivering aid, it's about empowering communities to shape their own future.” Yves Ngaleu, a Canadian Red Cross humanitarian expert who specializes in community engagement and accountability, went to Comoros earlier this year to help support the Comoros Red Crescent as a cholera outbreak impacted the islands. This was part of a larger public health response that included setting up oral rehydration points, engaging in community-based surveillance and setting up infection and prevention control measures in cholera treatment centres. His deployment was made possible thanks to support from the Government of Canada Affaires mondiales Canada | Global Affairs Canada. The Lebanese Red Cross is working tirelessly as they respond to the ongoing humanitarian needs in Lebanon. The escalating conflict has made delivering critical services like medical care, shelter and food extremely challenging, while the demand to meet these needs is higher than ever. Since October 2023, Lebanese Red Cross has been supporting people in conflict-affected areas across the country. As the main emergency medical and ambulance service provider in Lebanon, the Lebanese Red Cross continues to assist in search and rescue operations, evacuating patients from hospitals, and providing on-site medical treatment. More than 120,000 people have been reached with medical services and hundreds of thousands of relief items have been distributed to those in need. Donating to the Lebanon Humanitarian Needs Appeal will have double the impact as the Government of Canada Affaires mondiales Canada | Global Affairs Canada will match every donation made by individuals until November 3, 2024. The Canadian Red Cross had the pleasure of hosting our partners from the Lithuanian Red Cross/Lietuvos Raudonasis Kryžius during their recent visit to Toronto and Ottawa to join in a learning exchange about shared priorities between our National Societies. Our guests received a tour of program facilities for Meals on Wheels, Mobile Food Bank, and First Contact, and had the opportunity to connect with Canadian Red Cross colleagues and leadership during their stay. In addition to sharing technical expertise and knowledge with Canadian Red Cross colleagues, Lithuanian Red Cross leadership met with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to Canada as well as representatives from the Government of Canada. The goal of this visit was to demonstrate and strengthen the partnerships between our two National Societies and continue developing long-term approaches to emergency responses through experience and knowledge sharing. As part of our shared partnership agreement, the Canadian Red Cross is already supporting the Lithuanian Red Cross in the areas of protection, gender, inclusion, and accountability. We look forward to working with the Lithuanian Red Cross on future collaborations that will help support those impacted by the conflict in Ukraine.
