Envirolock® (EL) is an innovative, polyurea-based composite secondary containment system designed to prevent and mitigate all types of pipeline leaks (Figure 1). Concurrently, it also enhances detection speed and traceability through its unique ability to concentrate even very small leaks around sensors. Designed using substantial “in-the-trench” expertise, EL is maintenance-free and extremely practical, with flexible installation options and full operational compatibility. EL can also add business value by extending the pipeline’s useful life, facilitating product switching/blending, increasing asset resale value, appealing to ESG investors, and improving insurability. Cost-competitive in its deployment, operators will reap savings as well from avoided emergency response, liability, and clean-up expenditures. The Envirolock System provides an impenetrable physical barrier that protects pipelines from corrosion causing moisture, EMF interference from power lines, accidental strikes from equipment and other, more nefarious means of disruption buried pipelines. The Envirolock System does not interfere with inline inspection or cathodic protection and requires maintenance only after an incident has occurred. Designed for both high pressure and low pressure, in facility piping, water and sewer infrastructure and a range of other applications.

ASME PCC2 Certification update!
Just a quick update from Total Containment Inc. and our ASME PCC-2 certification. I am delighted to announce we have successfully completed the pressure testing of Envirolock® and are just waiting on the material testing of the materials we use to create Envirolock®. This is monumental milestone for us. I can't thank Jim Walsh and Christine Smith enough. They are power behind this product. Their commitment to TCI is unwavering and complete, I can't say it enough! I am super excited at the prospects for all of us. I'd also like to thank our investors who provided so much more than just funding, and the countless mentors I've had over the years through this crazy run, but we've done it. Soon, we will have a product that is certified, tested and proven and I'm very hopeful that the first installation of our technology happens right here in Alberta where the tech was born. If you've never risked everything for something you believe in, it's hard to understand what this means for me personally. This is a single step in a marathon but every single step is important and must be made before the next step can be considered. We have always known that Envirolock® was a game changer, but waiting while testing takes place is one of the most nerve wracking things I've ever had to do, but I'm so looking forward to the next stage and getting this product in the ground, on a pipeline, where it was always meant to be. Ok so I promised a video and here it is. What's missing is sound, sadly. It's just the way Stress Engineering Services, Inc. records testing, visuals typically give the signs of a failure, and of course measurement equipment upstairs from this video. Here is our 6" test spool over a meter of Envirolock® installed, what's missing is the structural (polyurea) layer on the outside that protects the fibers from the environment and adds massive amounts of compressive strength and abrasion/Impact resistance to deal with overburden, geohazards, and even traffic. ASME PCC-2 testing is mainly interested in where the strength comes from, in this case it's the reinforcement layer (so we didn't add the outer layer to the spool). Now, I have to warn you, there is NOT much to see (and that's a good thing for us!), when you hit play, you may have to drag the video forward faster to see what happens, there's not a lot to "see", but at approx. 2:10 on this video you can see the pipe shake and the hoses move a bit, this is the "event", when 4590 Psi is released all at once via a 3"x2" "defect" milled into the pipe wall at 50% of wall thickness. The pipe is rated to around the 5200 Psi mark, so after some discussion we made the assumption the failure in the pipe should happen around the 2500-3000 Psi range due to the 50% thru wall defect we put in it, but it didn't happen until 4590 Psi. I know I've said it a couple times in a previous post, but 4590 Psi is MUCH higher pressure then what the vast majority of pipelines operate at, the majority of NG and Oil pipelines operate near 1200 Psi range, with exceptions of course. Have a look, I wish there was sound so you could better appreciate what takes place inside the system, but consider this, if our system can accept a rupture at 4590 Psi, the chances of a release escaping from a pipeline operating at 2000 Psi let's say, are very small, of course there is always the chance, but we've built in a many multiples safety factor and feel very confident in the design, and we still don't know what the limits are on this tech. From low pressure water infrastructure, to high pressure pipelines, we can protect/isolate the infrastructure from the environment, and protect/isolate the environment from the infrastructure like nothing else. Some of the results of our testing happening in Houston this week at Stress Engineering Services, Inc. for PCC2 certification of Envirolock®. One of the spools we sent had our system installed on a 6" pipe, To create an actual leak we had to create a defect that would cause a release inside the system at near the pressure rating we wanted, in this case, it was 2500 psi. The pipe was rated for 5200 psi internal pressure (beyond which the steel will yield), that's close to 60000 psi specific yield strength of the carbon steel itself. What happened next astounded even me. The test started and was brought up to pressure, keeping in mind we expected this "defect" to release around 2500 psi as it was a 50% thru-wall defect, we hit 2500, then 3000, then 3500, then 4000 and no release, the pressure was increased and finally, at 4590 psi (almost to the yield of the carbon steel itself), the defect finally failed in 1 piece, whole! The release of energy into the Envirolock System was immense, imagine a rupture (3"x2" defect, see picture attached) at 4590 psi, it's difficult to get your head around for sure, but it's HUGE pressure. The sound was deafening, vibrations could be felt through the floor above the pit and when the dust settled, Envirolock was whole, undamaged. The pressure gauge measured 4590 psi! the "post-test" measurements found 1/1000th of an increase in dimension of Envirolock! (basically 0 dimensional change!). Not even close to what it would take to yield Envirolock. That's an "explosion" inside our system, and the integrity of the containment system was not compromised, equally strong in compression, as well as being chemical, temperature and impact/abrasion resistant! We expected the defect would fail no higher than 3000 psi, but to bring the pressure to near the yield of carbon steel pipe and NOT cause our system to fail, was astounding to me, and I know better than anyone what this technology is capable of. We have more testing to do for certification, so I'll be releasing some video soon, along with data of the results. Those who build, engineer, or own pipelines, now have another option for pipeline integrity that was not available before now, its quickly becoming time for us to pilot this tech. Some primary applications include Crossings Casings CO2 pipelines (RDF, and containment) High-risk areas (wetlands, water, residential) Class Locations Changes: This will take time, regulators, waivers, and industry but this is a big one for a lot of companies! Happy Family Day Alberta! I didn't get to spend much time with my family today because tomorrow, the Envirolock® System spools get put on a truck and will be en route to Houston Tx for ASME certification! A week longer than I anticipated, but when working with other people's schedules, timing is difficult. This crate (made it myself thank you very much, I'm no carpenter!) holds my company's future so to speak. I'm glad they are in the hands of a reputable, well-known company like Stress Engineering Services, Inc. and Brent Vyvial, PE. It will be a rough couple of weeks waiting for the results, but these spools are absolute tanks (low weight and ridiculously strong) and should handle the 2500 psi that they will be tested at without too much trouble. This is our benchmark design, we can make them for higher pressures, for specific chemical resistance/service, for lower pressures, or design the system to operate and protect pipelines in specific harsh environments like acid rock or other harsh environments. There are far too many people to thank, but my family and my team get the most praise, how they put up with my shit for so long is a constant discussion in my head, but they never let me down, not once. I also have to thank, and this may sound strange to some, (if you know, you know) but Alberta itself, namely because I doubt I would get the same support from industry on such a project as this, anywhere else in Canada. Alberta is unique in Canada, and I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunities it has provided me, or more proud to be an Albertan who lives and works alongside some of the most resilient, forward-thinking people anywhere. Thank you. The results should be back in March on the "Short Term Spool Survival" test, and results from the 1000 hr test, or Long Term Spool Survival test will take 41 days, so into April. I will share the results with those of you who are following along regardless of success or "the other thing".
