During November and December of 2024, the Philippine Green Building Council (PhilGBC) hosted a consultation workshop to discuss how to develop effective country climate action plans with local stakeholders. These conversations will feed into the development of our NDC Scorecard for sustainable buildings. At the workshop there were representatives from government agencies, Local Government Units (LGU), the private sector, NGOs and academic industry experts. During the workshop, four sessions were held to discuss : ️🌆 Enhancing building sector policies for climate action plans 🏛️ Local Government Unit (LGU) Green Building Policies and incentives 💼 Private sector insights and climate contributions 📊 Scorecard development, strategies, and policies for sustainable buildings Christopher de la Cruz, PhilGBC’s Vice Chair, shared his thoughts about the workshops. 🌍What is #EarthOvershootDay? It’s the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services exceeds what Earth can regenerate each year. This deficit is maintained by liquidating stocks and ecological resources and accumulating waste, primarily carbon dioxide in the air. This year, Earth Overshoot Day falls on 24 July. But today is Qatar’s overshoot day. The country has already exhausted its annual regenerative resource budget. Luxembourg will reach its overshoot day on 17 February and Singapore on 26 February. When is your country’s overshoot day? https://lnkd.in/gKs9tsgN It’s estimated that our #builtenvironment uses almost half the materials extracted globally every year and is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. We need to do more. We need to #BeBoldOnBuildings. Our ‘Circular Built Environment Playbook’ outlines how a #circulareconomy is an essential part of achieving our climate goals. Live today — the Energy Transitions Commission’s latest report, ‘Achieving Zero-Carbon Buildings: Electric, Efficient and Flexible’, outlines the crucial connection between the built environment and the energy system. We cannot decarbonise buildings without addressing the energy that powers them. Yet there is not a one-size-fits-all solution for decarbonisation across different building types, countries, and climates. That is why the ETC emphasises three key priorities for creating a zero-carbon dioxide emissions buildings sector: 💡Electrification must replace fossil fuels 📈Dramatically improving energy efficiency 🌆 Constructing efficient and low-carbon buildings The report lays out valuable and practical guidance for how industry can implement this combination of electric, efficient, and flexible[TE1] solutions for a #JustTransition which decarbonises buildings, improves standards of living, and can reduce energy bills. Have you gone all-electric yet? Not your car, your building! The Energy Transitions Commission’s new report - Achieving Zero-Carbon Buildings: Electric, Efficient and Flexible - due out on 4 February, shows how a combination of electric, efficient, and flexible solutions can decarbonise buildings, improve standards of living, and reduce energy bills – sounds pretty appealing, no matter your political stripes! I’ve been invited to join the webinar panel of speakers to mark the report launch, in partnership with Arup, on Tuesday 11 February 2025 at 12:00–13:15 GMT. During the panel, we will discuss what’s needed to deliver on that vision and I’ll be sharing how GBCs in the World Green Building Council network have used national roadmaps as a tool to build shared ambition across the sector and are now working with industry and policymakers to turn ambition into implementation. 💰How can we tell what’s a “green” investment? The EU Taxonomy is an important tool to help validate activities that represent an ambitious standard of sustainability. But, in the building and construction sector, it is in danger of lagging behind. Read our latest policy briefing here: https://lnkd.in/exQPmykV The EU Taxonomy climate related criteria are up for review and the EU Platform on Sustainable Finance is consulting on its preliminary recommendations. Our policy briefing sets out recommendations on how to better integrate life cycle global warming potential (GWP) (known as whole life carbon) requirements for new buildings in line with the 2024 revision to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). The revised EPBD mandates Member States to develop life cycle GWP targets and limits by 2027. The taxonomy needs to be swiftly updated to reflect these changes so that it can differentiate truly green investments from those that simply follow the legislated performance standards for all buildings. In the latest policy briefing, we: 🔎 Look closely at the EPBD and the EU Taxonomy – and their respective life cycle GWP requirements. 🇪🇺 Provide recommendations for the European Commission. These recommendations target improvements in data collection, capacity building, usability and compliance. They were created in collaboration with WorldGBC’s Sustainable Finance Taskforce and the Europe Regional Network Policy Taskforce featuring Green Building Councils and partners from across Europe. Updating the EU Taxonomy will help create new markets, capacities, databases and leadership ahead of the implementation of the EPBD and support the achievement of Europe’s ambitious climate goals. 🌍 Yesterday, the UN Environment Programme recognised its International Day of Clean Energy, which was declared to raise awareness and mobilise action for a just and inclusive transition to clean energy for the benefit of people and the planet. Fossil fuels are the largest contributor to global climate change and account for over 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions and nearly 90% of all carbon dioxide emissions. Buildings account for 37% of global energy-related emissions. So how do we build the transition to a zero-carbon future? 🛢️ We need to eliminate the use of fossil fuels across our industry. Currently electricity only accounts for 35% of buildings’ energy use. We therefore need to shift to using electricity for essential functions, where possible, such as heating and cooling, as well as other facilities that utilise gas, oil, and other fossil fuels. ☀️ But to fully decarbonise, the electricity generation needs to shift to low-carbon sources too – such as renewables providing on-site power from solar or heat pumps or switching to green energy from the power grid. 💰 These upgrades are typically more efficient, reducing energy demand and offering cost savings, as well as creating more healthy homes and outdoor spaces. 📢 Take action today. 🎓💻 Today, we join the world in recognising the United Nations's International Day of Education, celebrating the transformative power of education in fostering peace and sustainable development. 🌆 How can the building and construction sector support the development of Sustainable Development Goal 4? Job postings for 'green' jobs are growing nearly twice as fast as the number of people with the skills to fill them. Only one in eight have the necessary skills for these roles, with women disproportionately affected. Our global network of more than 75 Green Building Councils (GBCs) work with local businesses and communities, providing training to bridge critical skills gaps. In the last year, GBCs improved the skills of more than 94,000 people and provided over 760,000 hours of training, empowering professionals to lead the green transition. 📢 Take action today.
