Building sector emissions have stalled – but is it enough? For the first time since 2020, #emissions from the buildings and construction sector have stopped rising. But progress is too slow, and financing gaps threaten global #climategoals. The Global Status Report for Buildings & Construction 2024/2025 is out now! It highlights six urgent priorities, from #buildingenergycodes to #renewableenergy and financing, to accelerate the transition. 🔎 Download the report to explore key insights and take action: https://lnkd.in/dJvGs3iF Jonathan Duwyn Hanane Hafraoui Oliver Rapf Clara Camarasa, Ph.D. Ian Hamilton BPIE - Buildings Performance Institute Europe UCL Energy Institute International Energy Agency (IEA) UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre UN Environment Programme

Towards a zero-emission, efficient, and resilient buildings and construction sector. Hosted by UN Environment Programme.
À propos
Launched at COP21, the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC) is a voluntary partnership of national and local governments, inter-governmental organisations, businesses, associations, networks and think thanks committed to a common vision: A zero-emission, efficient and resilient buildings and construction sector. The GlobalABC functions as an umbrella or meta-platform – a network of networks – that brings together initiatives and actors focusing on the buildings and construction sector. Our network currently includes 256 members, among which are 37 countries. The GlobalABC works towards a zero-emission, efficient, and resilient buildings and construction sector, and aims to: • Be a global advocate and a catalyst to action: GlobalABC advocates for market transformation and focuses on catalysing action by defining a carbon neutrality strategy for the built environment. • Be a trusted platform to set targets and track progress: GlobalABC tracks progress in its annual Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction (Buildings-GSR), and its Building Climate Tracker, a new index to track progress in decarbonization in the sector. • Support countries in setting priorities and measures based on their situation: GlobalABC develops policy guidance and global, regional, and national buildings and construction roadmaps outlining aspirational targets, timelines, and key actions for essential policies and technologies, and, offering a model for national and citylevel buildings and construction roadmaps to support and raise the ambition of NDCs.

Emissions from the building and construction sector have stopped rising for the first time since 2020. The buildings where we work, shop and live account for a third of global emissions and a third of global waste. According to UN Environment Programme’s latest report, "Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction 2024-2025 - Not just another brick in the wall", a growing number of countries are working to decarbonize the sector. The new data shows that by adopting mandatory building energy codes aligned with net-zero emissions, mandatory performance standards and seizing energy efficiency investments, the sector’s energy intensity has reduced by almost 10%, while the renewable energy share in final energy demand has increased by nearly 5%. But slow progress and financing puts further success at risk. The good news is that government actions are working. But we must do more and do it faster. I encourage all countries to include plans to rapidly cut emissions from buildings and construction in their new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) ahead of the UN Climate Change Conference (#COP30) in Belém, Brazil. Countries are working to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the buildings sector, but sluggish progress and financing are putting the global climate goals at risk. The just-released Global Status Report for Buildings and Construction tracks the sector’s progress and finds that emissions have stopped rising for the first time since 2020. This is excellent news, but there is still work to be done: https://lnkd.in/dz4SxSwz #BuildforClimate

It is a great privilege to participate again in #MIPIM this year - and do not miss our Global Stocktake session on the Road to Zero Stage! Are you like me having strong doubts whether we are making enough progress on decarbonizing real estate? Well, indeed the global numbers prove us right. Built Environment stubbornly stays at 14Gt of CO2 emissions every year - that's 40% of the total! But there is tremendous progress, and we will talk about that. There is a recognition that we need a true #markettransformation approach to incentivize all value chain players to work together, and we see strong governmental commitment now through the #buildingsbreakthrough and the International Council on Buildings and Climate, both hosted by the Global Alliance for Buildings and Construction (GlobalABC). We can change our trajectory by 2030, but we need all hands on deck!
