Canadian pipelines are massive job creators. Recent examples include: - Trans Mountain hired approximately 37,277 people during construction of its Expansion Project. - Coastal Gaslink Pipeline Ltd created 25,700 full-time equivalent jobs during construction. Let’s build on that. Pipelines are the safest, most reliable and most economic means to ship energy, which constitutes Canada’s most valuable export. However, new pipelines will require the active support of the federal government and of Canadian provinces from coast to coast. Canadian legislation and regulation will need to change in order to support – and no longer impede – responsible energy development. There are several challenges currently facing APEGA, including new legislation proposed by the Government of Alberta, adopting new technologies into our practice, and global outsourcing of engineering and geoscience. There are also frustrations with members in terms of application timelines, application requirements, training opportunities, and the process for tracking and reporting of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours. I decided to run for the APEGA Council this year because engineering has been great for me, and I want all current and future engineers and geoscientists to have the same or better opportunities in their careers. I am concerned about the new legislation and the frustrations being voiced by our members. If elected, I will work to ensure that APEGA’s regulations and bylaws best represent our members' needs and maintain the profession's value, and I will aim to bring more clarity and ease of use to the system.
