A common question PhD candidate Kem-Laurin Lubin hears is "What will I do if AI takes my job?" "While this worry is undeniably valid, it prompts me to consider an even deeper question: How can we, in the humanities, with our rich tradition of storytelling and character exploration, harness our knowledge to shape the future of artificial intelligence?" “I’ve grown so much throughout the PhD program both personally and professionally, and I’ve worked so hard. Being chosen as valedictorian is the ultimate recognition of all I’ve done, and it is such an honour.” Congratulations to PhD graduate and valedictorian Jillian Adams, PhD, CPA! 🎉 One of her proudest achievements was receiving the Warren Ober Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Student in 2023, an acknowledgment to her dedication to teaching. She also received the Ontario Graduate Scholarship and the RBC Graduate Scholarship in Sustainability Research.
Convocation is a time to reflect on hard work, dedication, and innovation, and this year we are especially proud to celebrate five exceptional graduate students as they take the stage as valedictorians. For the first time, these graduate students represent the Class of 2024, sharing their personal stories and groundbreaking research that tackles real-world challenges. Congratulations to each of our five valedictorians who will address their fellow students and cross the stage this Friday and Saturday at the Physical Activities Complex. ▪ Jillian Adams, PhD, CPA (PhD ’24, Arts) ▪ Sanaz Saadatmand Hashemi, Ph.D. (PhD ’24, Engineering) ▪ Maryam Mohiuddin Ahmed (PhD '24, Environment) ▪ David Awosoga (MMath '24, Math) ▪ Nikhil George, Ph.D. (PhD '24, Science) Full Story: https://lnkd.in/gC75vg2D | #UWaterlooGrad

Congratulations to Anne Fleming (BA '88), an Honours English graduate from the University of Waterloo, whose novel "Curiosities" was shortlisted for The Giller Prize! 🎉 Published in April by Penguin Random House Canada, the book begins when amateur historian Anne discovers memoirs from 17th century England. As she pieces together a story of plague, superstition, and queer love, she must frame the events with her own contemporary understanding of truth and queer identity. As the Giller Prize jury writes, "Curiosities is a captivating story of hope, change, and belonging, and first and foremost a testament to varieties of love that endure beyond any one history or era.” University of Waterloo Alumni #UWaterloo #UWaterlooArts #GillerPrize2024

A groundbreaking new study by University of Waterloo researchers found that international students who study in Canada don’t see their skills underutilized once they join the Canadian labour market, a sign that signals the potential of the country’s International Student Strategy to help boost economic growth. The study’s findings provide a clearer view of how successful international students are once they complete their studies across Canadian post-secondary schools, notably in technology- and engineering-focused programs where they enjoy an earnings advantage over their peers. Here are some key findings from the study: ▪ 70% of Waterloo’s international graduates stay in Canada and become permanent residents. ▪ Waterloo's international graduates earn up to 37% more annually than Canadian-born counterparts. ▪ The study recommends updating Canada's International Student Strategy to align immigration with labour market needs. "It’s becoming clear that GenAI products are being released without adequately anticipating their potential misuse, such as impersonations, deepfake porn and compromising privacy and security. Such downsides will have an impact on everyone, but are poised to disproportionately affect one group in particular: women. It’s a problem that must be addressed before we move forward." Yesterday, the University of Waterloo marked National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with the opening of the new Indigenous outdoor gathering space, a Sunrise Ceremony, and recommitting to decolonization and reconciliation. As we reflect on this important day, we recognize that the work of decolonization and reconciliation is a shared responsibility. As Elder Myeengun Henry reminded us, “Don’t just go on with your day as usual, go on with this spirit and love inside of you.” Full Story: https://lnkd.in/gqGxYdYb | #EveryChildMatters 🧡
