Today is the first-ever Carbon Removal Day! 🎉 Brought to life by Jack Sullivan and TITO JANKOWSKI - AIRMINER, October 3rd is a day to raise awareness of carbon dioxide removal and its importance in mitigating climate change in our society. 💡 What is carbon removal? Carbon removal describes the process of capturing CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it in a safe place, preventing it from intensifying global warming. ⚙️ How does carbon removal work? There are processes in nature that capture CO2 and store it in plants, water, rocks or other forms. However, the amount of CO2 we have been emitting extensively surpasses the capacity of these systems. Thus, different organizations have developed novel carbon removal technologies and methods to aid nature's efforts. 🌴 For instance, BCHAR develops solutions for biochar carbon removal. 🪴Here’s how it works: Plants naturally capture CO2, and we then convert that plant material into biochar – a charcoal-like substance that locks in carbon for the long term. Unlike plants, which release CO2 back into the atmosphere when they decay, biochar stores carbon securely for hundreds of years. Organized by Climate Group, Climate Week NYC is a series of events dedicated to bringing global players together to learn and discuss solutions to climate change. And BCHAR was there! Our top 5 highlights of this week: ☕ Puro.earth CDR Summit, where we enjoyed good coffee and insightful chats with Oliver Erb, Vincent E. and Tristan Springer. 👥 Climate Tech Investors Summit. Thanks to Djoann Fal for the invite! It was lovely talking to you Mark Avioli, Sota Tsutsuki, Ayub A., Jennifer Xu and Antonio Ng. 🌿 Accelerating Action in the Supply Chain, including an intriguing speech by Ethan Soloviev, where we met The Estée Lauder Companies Inc., Mars and Mila Castleman. 🪨 The Biochar Carbon Revolution, a fantastic event dedicated to biochar only. A huge thanks to Jack Cebulski! 🥊 Lastly, we participated in the Climate Ring: Startup Sparring Match organized by Swissnex in Boston and New York and German Accelerator, a night full of exciting pitches for the planet. ... and numerous other events and encounters with inspiring people. Kaspar truly inspired. 👥 This reception was filled with real-talk conversations about the status quo, challenges and opportunities of climate change. 💡 One idea particularly resembled with us (paraphrased): Climate change is real. If everyone’s solution was as great as they marketed it, would we even be in the situation we are in? From Boston to New York 🇺🇸 The first half of our US trip powered by Swissnex in Boston and New York’s and Innosuisse’s Climate Collider startup program is over. 📍 Our CEOs Stefan M. Kaspar and Darius E. Stulz immersed themselves in the dynamic Boston climate ecosystem and attended engaging workshops led by Jade Ruscev, Esq., Alexander Harrall and Kit Pang, and visited Greentown Labs in Sommerville. 🫱🏽🫲🏾 Many thanks to Nathalie Minder, Oriane Rütsche and Lea Stupp for making all of this happen! 🌿 We are now in New York for the second part of this trip, where exciting things are happening at #ClimateWeekNYC. How does biochar remove carbon and reduce emissions? 🌿 In honor of last Saturday’s #ZeroEmissionsDay, let’s explore how biochar mitigates climate change by removing carbon and reducing emissions. 💪🏼 First and foremost, biochar removes carbon. How? Biochar locks carbon into a solid form for thousands of years, preventing it from re-entering the atmosphere as CO2. 💡 Beyond carbon removal, biochar also helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions through several mechanisms. 1. 🌰 Traditional waste management practices, such as disposing of agricultural waste like coconut shells in landfills, result in composting. This practice is cheap and simple. However, waste piles in landfills often grow too high, leading to methane emissions, which significantly contribute to global warming. Producing biochar instead of adding said waste to landfills thus reduces methane emissions.  2. 🌱 When added to soil, biochar can enhance water and nutrient retention, which decreases the need for chemical fertilizers typically added to soils. By reducing the reliance on such fertilizers, we can lower emissions associated with their production and application, such as CO2, nitrous oxide, and methane emissions. 3. 🐄 Fun fact: Adding biochar to livestock feed has shown the potential to reduce methane emissions from cattle, making it an innovative solution for the agricultural sector's climate impact.
