Heat stress management at work doesn’t always go to plan. For cases of Exertional Heat Stroke (EHS), the most serious and complicated heat-related illness, a 30-minute treatment window exists. That’s just half an hour to reverse a colleague’s excessively high core temperature to ensure their survival and prevent ongoing health complications. For many work sites, medical support will arrive after the EHS treatment window. Here, permanent disability or death of a heat-affected worker may hinge upon the ability of work colleagues to administer effective cooling treatment(s). In conjunction with Shane Rogerson, this paper details the successful field treatment of a suspected EHS case and the process of managing EHS risk for a large, climate diverse workforce. #heatstroke #cooling #heatstress
