🪸 GCRMN-Caribbean Data Workshop at the UNAM – Puerto Morelos, Mexico In early October, we had the honor of organizing the GCRMN-Caribbean data workshop for the regional and global report at the Unidad Académica de Sistemas Arrecifales of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) in Puerto Morelos, México. Supported by the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) and UN Environment Programme, we brought together 15 experts in coral reefs data analysis from the four corners of the Caribbean (Mexico, Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Sint Maarten, Jamaica, USVI, Colombia, Cuba, UKOT, Bahamas, USA, France, etc.). Thanks to International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI) for its participation and coordination with the forthcoming global report. At the same time, we met the participants from the UNDP REEF+ workshop and we learned more about the MERMAID assessment tool. After 4 days of intense discussions, we agreed on the structure of the next Caribbean report and on the data analysis method. We look forward to sharing the results on the state of coral reefs. In the meantime, the call for data has been extended to November 30. Thanks to Anastazia Banaszak and her team for the presentation and fascinating visit of her coral reproduction laboratory of the Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limmnología. Thanks to Sara Gutierrez Plata and her team for visiting her MarFUND project on king crab reproduction. of the Instituto Mexicano de Investigación en Pesca y Acuacultura Sustentables. Thanks to Mélina Soto of Healthy Reefs for Healthy People for the on-site ogranization and her immense support. Many thanks to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) for hosting this Data Workshop in its beautiful university. We're delighted to have such a fine team of experts on board for the preparation of the next 2 GCRMN reports (Caribbean & Global). #ForCoral Healthy Reefs for Healthy People, NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, AGRRA, Universidad de Costa Rica UCR, The Nature Conservancy, Fondo para la Accion Ambiental y la Niñez, University of the Virgin Islands, The University of the West Indies, JNCC, CNAP, NOVA BLUE ENVIRONMENT, Initiative Française pour les récifs coralliens (Ifrecor), SPAW-RAC

The upcoming COPs are key opportunities for global leaders to advance solutions that protect vulnerable ecosystems around the world, like coral reefs. I’m proud to highlight United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF)’s support for the Global Fund for Coral Reefs in driving innovative financing for nature. An example is the recent debt-for-nature swap in Indonesia—a landmark deal focused on coral reef conservation that underscores the importance of targeted financial mechanisms in bridging the funding gap for nature conservation. In partnership with the Governments of the United States and Indonesia, as well as GFCR implementing partners, this deal redirects US$35 million of Indonesia’s debt towards protecting critical reef ecosystems, including the Bird’s Head and Lesser Sunda-Banda Seascapes, home to 75% of all known coral species. Yet, we recognize that much more remains to be done. As we approach #COP16, UNCDF reaffirms its commitment to using blended finance to meet the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework. 🔗 https://bit.ly/3NuE9yW

Starting in one week, the Global Fund for Coral Reefs (GFCR) Coalition members will join conservation experts, state and private sector leaders, and stakeholder representatives at the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Calí, Colombia. Through a series of events and strategic engagements, GFCR representatives will: 🔵 Highlight the urgency of collective action to protect the remaining coral reefs, with emphasis on reefs with the potential to withstand climate impacts (refugia). 🔵 Present the latest scientific findings, including updates on the fourth mass global bleaching event and the coral habitats showing resilience. 🔵 Showcase opportunities for public and private leaders to contribute to transformative conservation impact through investments and innovation. Amidst the 4th mass coral bleaching event - the most extensive ever recorded - #CBDCOP16 comes at a critical point where scaled action to address climate change and human-induced stressors is required to prevent coral reef collapse. Coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean floor but support 25% of marine life. They are essential to over 1 billion people for food security, coastal protection, and income. However, since 1970, more than half of the world's coral reefs have been lost, and without immediate intervention, 90% could be gone by 2050. Despite the challenges, there is a beacon of hope. Scientists have identified coral refugia—resilient areas where protection can foster recovery. GFCR has already mobilised 30% of its ambitious capitalisation target and is leveraging additional finance through innovative blended finance solutions. However, far more needs to be done. By scaling up efforts to protect coral reefs, GFCR aims to uplift coastal communities globally. During COP16, GFCR will be calling upon member states, philanthropies and impact investors to join its growing coalition and give coral reefs hope for future existence. 🔗 For more details about GFCR’s COP16 engagements: https://lnkd.in/g_zipU-s 🔗 Ahead of the convening, the GFCR has launched a new publication presenting implementation alignment with 21 out of 23 of the GBF targets.
